light switches point down when on not up, up is off.
 
I still think "Light Switch" itself is not quite correct.
In Australia when a light switch is up it is off - therefor dark
When the light switch is down it is on - therefore light.
This is 100% opposite of that described.
Unless they are referring to light switches in USA which are opposite of ours.
