It could be a violin, viola, cello, double bass or any similar instrument, although the bigger the instrument the "fuller" the "waist". There are even electric devices that one can play/strike with a bow. Then there are the asian instruments the Erhu ( vertical fiddle) for example which is little more than a stick with 2 strings - very narrow "waist". The Thai Saw u also with only 2 strings. The Indonesian gamelan the rebab a two-string lute and the Japanese Kolyu and the Korean Haegum. Can we include here the Diddley bow - a bottle has a "waist". I'm sure I could come up with more. Ex-music grp secretary.
