Presume he was travelling on horseback and Friday was the name of his horse - or, like myself, he has named his car and travelling by a car named Friday.

I think there is a spelling mistake shouldn’t it read he left ON Friday not OFF , if that is the case he left on a horse named Friday and returned on his horse named Friday

Friday is the name of his horse. The way it is worded is that he was not riding Friday when he left (he left off a Friday) but was when he returned (returned on Friday). Hence it could have been any day of the week when he left/returned.
