Revealed: Tried-and-true cleaning method for the shiniest sink you've ever seen!

Is it just us, or does it sometimes feel like housework is never-ending? No matter how much we clean and tidy, there's always more to be done. But don't worry, dear members, we have a simple trick that will not only make one area of your home gleam but will also give you a sense of accomplishment in your never-ending cleaning journey.

We're talking about the most used but often overlooked place in your kitchen: the sink!

Marla Cilley, also known as @FlyLady on social media, has captured the hearts of millions of followers with her practical, step-by-step advice for maintaining an organised and tidy home. So, why did she choose the sink, of all places, as the central focus of her method?

As @FlyLady herself explains, 'Many of you can't understand why I want you to empty your sink of your dirty dishes and clean and shine it when there is so much more to do... I just want to put a smile on your face…'

'When you get up the next morning, your sink will greet you, and a smile will come across your lovely face. I can't be there to hug you, but I know how good it feels to see yourself in your kitchen sink.'

So, without further ado, allow us to share @FlyLady's method for transforming your dull, lifeless sink into a shimmering showpiece! (But before getting started, remember to rinse your sink well between each step of the cleaning process.)

1. Empty your sink and fill it with hot water. Don't hold back; you need enough hot water to submerge any stains or grime.

2. Add 1 cup of bleach to the sink, and let it soak in the hot water for an hour. Trust us, the results are worth the wait!

3. Using tongs and gloves, carefully remove the bleach water and rinse your sink thoroughly.

4. Next, grab a powdered cleanser, such as bicarb soda, or a gentle scrubbing product. Apply it to your sink and scrub away, paying special attention to the rim and faucets.

5. Give your sink another thorough rinse. You're nearly there!

6. Time for the final touch - reach for your favourite window cleaner (Windex is @FlyLady's personal choice) and give your sink a glossy shine.

7. For those with stainless steel sinks, @FlyLady offers an additional step: after soaking and rinsing your sink as outlined above, use a steel wool pad to buff your sink's finish to perfection.

Now that your sink is glistening, all that's left to do is maintain its pristine condition. @FlyLady recommends having a clean dish towel on hand to dry your sink out after every use. Before you know it, you'll be doing this as often as you can, and your sink will become a beacon of cleanliness and organisation.

In the words of @FlyLady herself, 'Amazing things will happen in your kitchen when your sink is that shiny.'

Key Takeaways

  • A simple chore of cleaning your sink can make you feel accomplished and more in control of maintaining a clean home.
  • Social media user @FlyLady cleaning method provides a step-by-step guide to cleaning and shining your sink, making it look new.
  • Regular maintenance can ensure your sink stays clean and shiny with little effort, improving the overall atmosphere in your kitchen.

Now that your kitchen sink is clean, it's crucial to give attention to the sink's drain in order to eliminate any unpleasant odours.

But don't worry; mastering the art of cleaning a kitchen sink drain using bicarb soda and vinegar is a breeze! Also, this dynamic duo does more than just combat funky smells—it's a tried and tested method for unclogging drains.

Remember the golden rule: a 1:2 ratio of bicarb soda to white vinegar. Begin by pouring the bicarb soda down the drain, followed by a gradual addition of the white vinegar. Allow the effervescent combination to work its magic for approximately 15 minutes.

Complete the process by flushing the drain with boiling hot water to eradicate any lingering residue. And there you have it—mission accomplished!

Or you could just use gumption and citric acid. You can clean your kettle out with the citric acrid by putting in a few drops, fill with water and boil it. Once boiled pour it down the sink drain and it will clear any thing down there.

Bleach and Windex are the most toxic products to use in my opinion. If you wipe your sink daily, it doesn't get a build up. Instead of filling it up with bleach, use dishwashing liquid, cream cleanser or gumption.

Gumption or Pink Stuff are the best I have found for cleaning and polishing stainless steel sinks.

I believe I read somewhere that you should not use bleach on metal. Could be wrong. Just use dishwashing detergent on your scourer, rub it around your sink & it should rinse off to a sparkling sink. Or use gumption, but in the first place don’t leave it from one wash-up to the next without cleaning it!
