Revealed: The Surprising $5.20 Supermarket Treat Named Australia's #1 Chocolate Chip Cookie - See Which Brand Tops the List!

When it comes to indulging in a sweet treat, Australians have a plethora of choices, but nothing quite hits the spot like a classic chocolate chip cookie. With so many options on the supermarket shelves, it can be a challenge to pick the best one. Thankfully, the consumer group CHOICE has done the hard work for us, conducting a taste test to crown the top chocolate chip cookie in the land.

In a surprising twist, the results of the CHOICE review have revealed that the most delicious cookies aren't necessarily the most expensive or premium brands. The taste test involved 22 different types of chocolate chip cookies from popular supermarkets and brands, including Woolworths, ALDI, Coles, Cadbury, Arnott's, and more. A panel of expert judges conducted a blind taste test, evaluating each cookie based on appearance, flavour, aroma, and texture.

The competition was stiff, but the top three cookies emerged, with the bronze medal going to Woolworths Bakery chocolate chunk cookies. These in-store baked treats scored an impressive 75 percent overall ranking and are a steal at $1.77 per 100g.

Coles Ultimate cookies with 40 percent chocolate chips took the silver spot with a 77 percent expert ranking. These cookies offer a rich chocolate experience at just $1.25 per 100g, proving that you don't have to break the bank for a quality cookie.

But the cookie that took the biscuit, so to speak, was the Coles Bakery 'dreams crumb true' New York choc chip cookies. These cookies not only tantalized the taste buds of the judges but also earned the title of healthiest option with the highest Health Star Rating. At a cost of $1.83 per 100g or $5.20 per pack, these cookies were praised for their generous dark chocolate chunks and the perfect balance of crunch and chewiness, achieving a top score of 78 percent.

Mark Serrels, CHOICE Editorial Director, expressed his surprise at the results, noting that 'Coles took out both first and second place in our testing, followed very closely by Woolworths in third place.' He added, 'These cookies beat some of the more premium options in our testing, proving that price does not always equal performance.'

The Coles Bakery 'dreams crumb true' cookies were particularly lauded for their texture and chocolate quality. 'Our experts praised these cookies for their dark chocolate chunks and said they were quite crunchy with a little bit of chew in the centre,' Serrels said.

This taste test serves as a reminder that sometimes, the best things in life (or at least in the cookie aisle) come in simple, affordable packages. It's a victory for cookie lovers and budget-conscious shoppers alike.

So next time you're at the supermarket, you might want to skip the fancy packaging and head straight for the Coles Bakery section to grab a pack of Australia's best chocolate chip cookies. And for our Seniors Discount Club members, remember that enjoying a cookie with a cup of tea is one of life's simple pleasures – and now you know exactly which cookie to reach for.
