REVEALED: Australia's best pie for 2022

The verdict is in: Rolling Pin Pies & Cakes has won Australia's best pie for the third year in a row!

With thousands of entries from over 300 Australian bakeries across dozens of categories and three days of critical taste testing, the judges (it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it) from the Baking Association of Australia named Ocean Grove's Rolling Pin Pies and Cakes the winner of the coveted award with their Creamy Mushroom and Truffle pie.

It has a golden flaky crust that encases a smooth mushroom filling that is flavoured with the earthy tones of truffle and is baked to perfection. Oh, and did we mention that it's also vegetarian?

The Rolling Pin Pies & Cakes bakery can be found in Victoria's Queenscliff, Leopold, and South Geelong neighbourhoods in addition to its flagship location in Ocean Grove.

It's an hour and a half away from Melbourne, but the pie is definitely something you should travel for.

Nathan Williams, manager of Rolling Pin, told the Geelong Advertiser that he believed it was the first time a vegetarian pie had won the national award, and that he was unlikely to ever eat one himself.

"I despise mushrooms with a passion," Mr Williams laughed as he said.

"When I made this pie, I knew it wasn't for me. But I know a lot of people love mushrooms, and it was recently added to the competition as its own category – which is why, after experimenting with it previously, I really wanted to get the recipe right this time."

"We were still surprised that a mushroom pie won the overall award," he said.

Rolling Pin Pies and Cakes also took first place class award in the Seafood Pie category, first place class award in the Mushroom Pie category (with the same pie crowned Australia's best), and medals in the plain mince beef pie, chunky beef pie, poultry pie, seafood pie, gourmet, traditional pasties, gourmet pastries, and flavoured beef pie categories, competing against some of the best bakeries in the country.

They ended up taking home a total of fifteen medals, which includes three gold medals, eleven silver medals, and one bronze medal, which is quite an accomplishment in what sounds to us a lot like the pie-olympics.

The annual pie and pasty competition of the Baking Association of Australia was held in Melbourne from May 31 to June 2.

The complete list of 2022 winners from across the country can be found here. Why not plan an Australian road trip to see the ones in your state?

Or, better yet, why not try making your own batch of delicious pies at home instead? This video recipe below might help!

I read the list, some of the pie concoctions sound interesting, not sure I would have thought to put them in a pie.;)

15 medals is a real coup for this company, congratulations. Strange to think that Mr Williams will never know how good the pies are that won an award for the company. May he however enjoy the fruits of his labour.

Love to try Marion's recipe too. Looks yummy.

The pie contest I would like to see is were the judges go to the pie shops and buy and try the buys and then judge them so they are judging the same pie that we are buying for I have bought pies from award winning bakeries and wondered on how the heck they won in the first place.
