Retiree mistakenly donates furniture with hidden $30k life savings inside

For most retirees, the thought of downsizing may bring a wide range of emotions. But for one man, the move meant the loss of a valuable asset—specifically, $30,000 in cash.

In a tale of misfortune, the Southeast Queensland resident donated a section of his well-worn lounge to an op shop at the beginning of the year as part of his move to a smaller home.

Little did he realise, at the time, his life savings were tucked away in the cushion of the same section he handed over.

Speaking to 7NEWS, the man said he had believed that the cash was in one of the sections he kept, and it wasn't until a few weeks later that the reality of his mistake hit him.

'I didn't even think about it for a few weeks. It wasn't on my radar,' he said.

Once he realised the expensive error, the man quickly went back to the op-shop to search for the piece of furniture—only to be told that it had been sold only a couple of days after donation.

Making an already difficult situation worse, the buyer had also picked up the lounge themselves instead of getting it delivered, meaning that there was no record of who purchased it.

'I think the bit that really hurts is that I've done this to myself, and I can't believe how bl**** stupid I was, honestly,' the retiree said.

Unfortunately, all the man can do now is accept the fact that he'll most likely never see the money again and hope that the cash went to somebody who truly needed it.

'There are a lot of people in dire need. Maybe it'll transform someone's life,' he said.

One positive aspect of this situation is that it serves as a strong reminder for all of us to safeguard our hard-earned money.

When you're planning a move, it's essential to thoroughly inspect your furniture and check for any valuable items that might be tucked away in drawers, cushions, or hidden crevices.

Make sure they don't contain anything valuable or sensitive before you hand them over. Sometimes, these valuable items can be easily overlooked at first glance. This precaution will help you avoid any unpleasant surprises later on.

Key Takeaways

  • A retiree from southeast Queensland unintentionally donated around $30,000 in cash, hidden inside a lounge, to an op-shop.
  • He made the donation while downsizing to a smaller home and didn't realise that the cash was in the donated section of the lounge for several weeks.
  • The op-shop sold the lounge within a few days of receiving it, and the buyer picked it up directly, leaving no record of their identity.
  • The retiree has come to terms with the possibility that he may never retrieve his lost money but shared his story online with the dim hope of getting some portion back.

I hope whoever ended up with his couch, found the money and handed it in. They would be rewarded in more ways than one going forward!

Not a good idea to do this at all and especially as one ages and memory declines. I have mine in the bank as no reason to keep hidden from anyone!

That is so sad! Let’s hope the person is an honest person and returns the cash.

If the couch was clean and in good condition , the buyer might not even know that there is money inside the cushion - they’ve probably felt there was no reason to unzip the cushion to wash or check. 🤔🤔🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

Eejit.
Trying to conceal money in furniture is never a good idea.
