Retailer launches ‘denim booty shorts’ that will make your jaw drop

The younger generation may find some older fashion trends ridiculous, but these ‘uniquely’ designed shorts will undoubtedly go down as the worst ones in history.
In a move that’s left several fashionistas worldwide scratching their heads, the mega fast fashion outlet, Shein, has released a bold pair of ‘denim booty shorts’ (which are, in reality, a new take on undies) for a whopping $14.95.
The bizarre-looking ‘shorts’, if we can call them that, feature a waistband, belt loops, fly-buttons, and a leather patch on the back reading ‘Being Human’. Now, can somebody please call the fashion police?
If that’s not strange enough, the product description indicates that the shorts feature a ‘straight-leg’ and ‘skinny fit’.
In spite of that, several customers bought the risque shorts. However, many of them were unsatisfied with the fit.
‘They are too small. I can’t close buttons even with a large one. I will have to lose weight. There’s also no stretch.’ one unhappy customer wrote.
‘Cute but not great.’ chimed another, while a third added: ‘It looks different and is far more high-waisted (as you can tell by the length of the crotch). It fits weird.’
Shein’s odd clothing collection
But this isn’t the first time Shein has sparked controversy over a pair of shorts. The retail giant also sells ‘Low Rise Booty Denim Shorts’, which come in different colours for $15.95. It has received over 100 reviews from shoppers and currently sits at an average rating of 4.93 out of 5.
A third pair of denim shorts from the retailer also caused a stir online. The ‘Eilly Bazar Raw Cut Shorts’ were described as a ‘loin cloth’ by some users online.
‘These are not booty shorts. These are loincloths. I’m just saying.’ one woman wrote alongside a picture of the $20.95 fashion item.
‘They can’t be called bootie shorts. Surely, they are coochie shorts.’ teased another.
The dark side of fast fashion
Aside from its unconventional array of products, Shein has found itself in hot water several times for the nature of its business. The emergence of the fast fashion industry has fundamentally changed how people consume fashion.
What was once considered a luxury item for only the wealthy has become accessible and affordable for all. This shift, however, has come at a cost to both the environment and those who create the clothes.
Fast fashion brands, including Shein, have turned the traditional way of clothes production on its head. This has resulted in an overproduction of clothes with too much emphasis on speed and too little focus on sustainability. As a result, more and more resources are being used to meet demand as cheaply as possible, which has led to an immense amount of waste and pollution.
Not only are environmental impacts an issue, but human rights violations have also become rampant within the industry as a whole. Many of the labourers employed by fast fashion factories are allegedly underpaid, overworked, and abused, making them the unseen victims of an industry that prioritises profit over people.
While we certainly can’t think of an occasion where these shorts from Shein would be appropriate to wear, it’s comforting to know that by not buying them, we’re actually being sustainable and environmentally-friendly shoppers. Plus, if nothing else, just imagining yourself trying them on might be enough to make you chuckle.
