It is with great sadness that we report the death of one of music's most enduring talents, Christine McVie.
The 79-year-old singer and songwriter passed away surrounded by her loved ones in hospital following an unspecified short illness.
‘We would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being, and revered musician who was loved universally,’ her family said.
McVie was best known for her work as a core member of the rock band Fleetwood Mac, with whom she achieved immense success throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
McVie wrote and sang some of Fleetwood Mac's most memorable hits, including ‘Everywhere’, ‘Songbird’, ‘Say You Love Me’ and ‘Little Lies’.
In Australia, songs like ‘Tusk’, ‘Sara’, and ‘Hold Me’ topped local charts.
Her deep catalogue of work both with Fleetwood Mac and as a solo artist endeared her to legions of fans around the world, who will no doubt be mourning her loss today.
In a statement, the band said McVie ‘was truly one-of-a-kind, special, and talented beyond measure’.
‘She was the best musician anyone could have in their band and best friend anyone could have in their life. We were so lucky to have a life with her.
‘She will be so very missed.’
In a separate post, bandmate Stevie Nicks expressed her grief over losing her friend.
‘A few hours ago, I was told that my best friend in the whole world since the first day of 1975, had passed away.’ she said.
‘I didn’t even know she was ill… until late Saturday night. I wanted to be in London; I wanted to get to London —- but we were told to wait.’
Having no means to be by McVie’s side, Nicks said Haim’s ‘Hallelujah’ — a song about the passing of a loved one — was stuck in her head.
‘I thought I might possibly get to sing it to her, and so, I’m singing it to her…’
‘It’s all I can do now.’
McVie, born Christine Perfect on July 12, 1943, had a natural flair for music.
A daughter to a violinist father and a psychic and faith healer mother, she started playing the piano at just four years old.
It was in college that she made her rock and roll debut playing as a bassist for the band Sounds of Blue. The band broke up by the time she graduated and moved to London.

In 1969, she left another band she joined when she met Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie.
In 1970, the pair married. She also joined Fleetwood Mac shortly after and was a mainstay for the next two decades.
Christine and John divorced in 1978, but both went on as band members.
After years of performances and tours, McVie officially retired from Fleetwood Mac in 1998.
Aside from the release of a solo album in 2004, McVie lived out her years in retirement away from the limelight.
It wasn’t until 2014 that McVie joined the band again, just in time for their On With The Show tour.
Aussies last saw Christine McVie on their national tour in 2019.
