Residents of the real-life Ramsay street share life in the famous Neighbours spot

Fans of the long-running soap Neighbours are heartbroken over the announcement that it will be axed from UK's Channel 5 due to budget cuts.

The popular TV show helped to ‘discover’ some of the best talents the world has ever seen, including Kylie Minogue, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, and more.

Now that the fictional Ramsay Street will cease to exist from our TV screens (but not from our memories of course!), residents of Pin Oak Court have shared a glimpse of what living is like on a "permanent film set" of a popular TV show.

A number of residents claimed that the street has seen influxes of tourists taking photos and mingling with the actors and producers.

Resident Rob Lewis said that while it was an honour for him to be living in a famous spot, he said that it has "been a big deal and a detriment" for him given that the street has not experienced "peace and quiet" in years since the show filmed there.

Having said that, one might wonder whether it's safe to live in the area while filming — and the subsequent incursion of fans and tourists — takes place?

Well, it turned out that Fremantle Media, the show's producer, have employed full-time security guards to patrol the street, ensuring the safety of both the actors and the residents of the area.

Meanwhile, British expats Miles Shackley and his partner Hayley Jones live in one of the homes that were regularly being filmed for the show.

The couple's home was featured for exterior shots of the home of Karl and Susan Kennedy played by Alan Fletcher and Jackie Woodburne.

Mr Shackley revealed that producers requested them not to alter or upgrade the façade of their home, adding that houses on the street were given the same instruction.

The homeowners said that alterations of the homes were provided by the show, claiming that one of their neighbours had a new motorhome in their driveway after the producers explained to them that it would be a temporary accommodation for a visiting character on the show.

The couple admitted to being fans of the show, saying that they enjoyed watching the filming process from their windows whenever the shots are not pointed directly at their house.

Mr Shackley said: "I thought we would be more star-struck than we were when we met the cast."

The couple also jokingly said that they tried to think of ways to get their cats, Anastasia and Pippin, to get a background role.

Ms Jones said that she had been a "life-long fan" of the show, prompting her and Mr Shackley to purchase the home at an auction in December 2019 for a whopping $1.405million.

"It's fun when it's Neighbours, and it's lovely when it's not...but on balance, I'd love for another distributor to come in and save the show," she said.

Apparently, living in a "permanent filming set" has its caveats but if you're a fan of the show, the positives far outway the negatives.
