We are sad to report that Lisa Loring, best known for her role as the original Wednesday Addams in the 1960s TV adaptation of The Addams Family, has passed away at the age of 64.
Her daughter, Vanessa Foumberg, told The Hollywood Reporter that Lisa died of a stroke caused by high blood pressure.
'She went peacefully with both her daughters holding her hands,' Foumberg said.
Lisa had been on life support for three days, according to a Facebook post from Lisa’s friend Laurie Jacobson.
'She is embedded in the tapestry that is pop culture and in our hearts always as Wednesday Addams,' Laurie wrote.
The Addams Family first aired on ABC in 1964 and ran for two seasons. The show was the first adaptation of Charles Addams’ New Yorker cartoons and resulted in future films, animated series, and even a Broadway musical.
As Wednesday Addams, Lisa had to perfect the character’s iconic 'shuffle' and will always be known for doing so. In fact, in December, Jenna Ortega, the most recent actress to take on the role of Wednesday Addams in the popular Netflix show Wednesday, paid tribute to Lisa while appearing on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
‘I paid homage to Lisa Loring, the first Wednesday Addams. I did a little bit of her shuffle that she does,’ Ortega said during an appearance on the talk show.
During Lisa’s teen years, she also had small roles in other TV shows, such as As the World Turns and The Pruitts of Southampton. Originally born Lisa Ann DeCinces, in the Marshall Islands, she started using a stage name at age three when she first began modelling.
Fellow Addams Family cast member John Astin, who played Gomez Addams, is the last living cast member of The Addams Family.
Members, as we remember Lisa today, let’s look back on the iconic Wednesday Addams character she created and the lessons about staying true to yourself that she taught us all! We are grateful for her everlasting contribution to popular culture and send our thoughts and prayers to her family and friends.
