Remembering the life of actress and performer Mitzi Gaynor (93)

The entertainment industry mourns the loss of another star.

Mitzi Gaynor, a name synonymous with the golden age of Hollywood musicals, has passed away at the age of 93.

Mitzi's management team confirmed the passing of their 'beloved friend' through her official social media accounts.

Born Francesca Marlene de Czanyi von Gerber on 4 September 1931, Mitzi Gaynor was a force to be reckoned with from a young age.

Her family's musical background set the stage for what would become her remarkable career in show business.

Mitzi was a star famous for her versatility as a performer.

She was not only a gifted dancer but also a talented actor and singer.

Her career spanned eight decades and touched the hearts of audiences across film, television, and the stage.

Mitzi's work in other musicals alongside legends like Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Gene Kelly cemented her place in Hollywood history.

However, it was her collaboration with Sinatra that led to her iconic role in the 1958 film adaptation of South Pacific.

Mitzi Gaynor's role in the film as Nellie Forbush remained to be one of her most celebrated performances, as she brought depth and charm to the character.

Sinatra's influence and support allowed her to audition for Oscar Hammerstein II, which ultimately secured her the part that would become one of her most memorable.

The film, which earned Mitzi a Golden Globe nomination, was a testament to her enduring appeal.

Thanks to the success of South Pacific, Mitzi also pivoted to TV screens.

She made early appearances on variety series and specials and shared the screen with some of the biggest names of the time.

In 1959, she was the only woman to guest star alongside Sinatra, Crosby, Dean Martin, and Jimmy Durante on ABC's The Frank Sinatra Timex Show special.

Mitzi's adaptability shone through as she reinvented herself as a performing entertainer.

With the help of her husband and manager, Jack Bean, she created a musical revue that became a major attraction in theatres across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

Her success in Las Vegas was unparalleled, and she earned the title of the highest-paid female entertainer and the Las Vegas governor's trophy for Star Entertainer of the Year in 1970.

Her television variety specials like Mitzi...Zings Into Spring and Mitzi... Roarin' in the '20s also garnered Emmy nominations and wins.

As the entertainment industry evolved, so did Mitzi's performances.

While touring with a large ensemble became impractical, she streamlined her production into a one-woman show and continued touring until 2002.

Mitzi Gaynor's love for touring and connecting with her fans worldwide were a hallmark of her career.
Offstage, Mitzi had a vibrant personality and was known for her loyalty, warmth and humour.

She was also an accomplished cook, adding yet another facet to her multi-talented persona.

Now THAT'S a tragedy! She was a brilliant dancer and actress. She was so good in South Pacific. I'm remembering her now singing 'I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair'. How many women could still look stunningly beautiful while washing their hair, and singing and dancing? Also 'Cockeyed Optimist' and 'I'm In Love With a Wonderful Guy'. Unforgettable!

No she was 93. That’s a fabulous age, it’s sad for her family and friends but not a tragedy. A wonderful life well lived.

The use of the word 'tragedy' was very deliberate. Almost every week we're assailed with screaming headlines about the death of some 'celebrity' from a drug overdose or a fall.

We're told it's a tragedy and news reports go on for days. Take the current saturation of the media with the death of a former One Direction member. He completely wrecked a hotel room left drug paraphernalia all over the place and fell from the balcony. The media however, tells us that he was 'open about his demons', as if that excuses his behaviour.

Mitzi Gaynor was a multi talented performer who lived a great life, as you say, over 70 odd years in the theatre and movies. I believe if drunk, drug affected 'celebrities' are mourned to the extent they are, Mitzi Gaynor's death is a tragedy by comparison. And she got less than one minute on last night's news.

I was going to mention a comparison like that. 👍

And he was only in a manufactured group that managed to last 6 years until about 8 years ago and never heard of him since then.🙄
At least her legacy will live on for the right reasons.🙂
RIP

Very sad new indeed for a well beloved actress.

Mitzi Gaynor was certainly a wonderful "Stand Out" actress for sure. In a way, the same/similar vogue to Doris Day.

An adjective as to how I would describe her is "INCREDIFANTABULOUS".
Mitze, Sing & dance forevemore.

You certainly lead a real colourful, &, dare to say, happy life, indeed.
