Remember your rights: Local government introduces free aid dedicated to seniors

Navigating the complexities of the legal system can be daunting.

This statement goes true for seniors, who may face unique challenges and concerns.

An advocacy body recognised this and made an invaluable resource tailored even for the wisest and most experienced members of society.

Legal Aid NSW released the 2025 edition of the Legal Topics for Seniors Diary, a treasure trove of knowledge and guidance on a wide array of issues particularly relevant to seniors.

From retirement planning to the intricacies of making a will, the diary should equip seniors with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions.

It also delved into cost of living pressures, a concern that is all too real for many.

The diary also addressed the how-to's in navigating situations seniors might encounter, like neighbour disputes and consumer rights when buying goods and services.

These are some of the everyday issues that could quickly become overwhelming without the correct information.

One of the most significant aspects of the 2025 diary was how seniors could avoid scams, which have become sophisticated and prevalent as of late.

The 2025 journal contained tips on how to identify potential scams and strategies to protect oneself.

Apart from the knowledgeable content, the diary included artworks by award-winning Aboriginal artist Jasmine Sarin.

Her artworks made the diary more visually pleasing while paying respects to Elders within Indigenous communities and culture.

Seniors can quickly get a copy of this diary for free at their local Legal Aid NSW offices.

The diary is also available in state MPs and public libraries. The diary is also available online.

Legal Aid NSW's CEO, Monique Hitter, emphasised the diary's practicality.

'We are proud to provide this wonderful diary to our seniors each year and always get fantastic feedback about how beneficial it is,' Ms Hitter shared.

The positive feedback from seniors who have utilised this resource in the past is a testament to its value.

Jennifer Ball, the incoming President of the Law Society of NSW, also praised the initiative.

'Seniors will find the expansive range of topics covered in this diary extraordinarily useful,' Ms Ball said.

'It will enable them further to understand their rights and responsibilities in our legal system.'

In conclusion, the 2025 Legal Topics for Seniors Diary is more than just a journal; it's a guidebook to legal empowerment for seniors.

It's a reminder that knowledge is power, and with the correct information, seniors can confidently navigate complicated situations.

What a great idea. It is put out by NSW Legal Aid. I am in Perth but I have completed the online order form. Hopefully they will send me a copy.
That's great! Some laws may vary per state but it's always good to have a handy guide around that covers general regulations.

Here's to hoping that Perth (and other states/cities, really) can follow suit! :)
