Remember when baking meant hours in the kitchen? This $1.15 trick will change that

Some mums swear by tried-and-true family recipes—but others are cooking up something totally unexpected.

One Aussie woman has gone viral for a ridiculously easy dessert trick using a surprising $1.15 product. And the best part?

It only takes four ingredients.

Over the past few weeks, a simple cookie recipe has taken off online, impressing home bakers with its low cost and short prep time.

The secret ingredient?

A $1.15 packet of Coles or Woolworths home-brand cake mix—either vanilla or chocolate—turned into delicious cookies with just an egg, 100g of melted butter, and some sprinkles.

Mum and content creator Bec (@mummyandmeeatallergyfree) shared her own take on the recipe, describing it as ‘ridiculously easy’ and ideal for baking with kids.

‘The hardest bit is not eating them all when they come out of the oven,’ she told Yahoo Lifestyle.

‘It’s great because it’s so versatile too. You can roll in sprinkles or swap to vanilla cake mixes and use chocolate chips for chocolate chip cookies. You could add jam to make jam drops—the options are endless.’

To make the cookies, Bec simply combined all four ingredients, rolled the dough into balls, and baked them on a tray at 180 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes.

She also highlighted how allergy-friendly and vegan-friendly the recipe could be, making it perfect for shared events or school functions.

Bec discovered the trick from fellow content creator Cheree Lawrence (@ohsobusymum_), but adapted the method to suit her children’s dietary needs.

Her kids have cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA), a common condition in babies that can even be transferred through breast milk.

‘My little cooking trick is half a tub of this apple purée,’ she said in her video.

‘If you don't use that, you could use mashed banana, chia egg, flax egg, egg replacer, aquafaba, which is chickpea liquid. Choose your own adventure.’

Bec swapped butter for Nuttelex and used apple purée instead of egg—two easy swaps that kept the cookies delicious while remaining allergy-friendly.

She also noted the packet mixes were already dairy, egg, and soy-free—though they contain gluten, wheat, and may contain sesame.

To make the cookies gluten-free, bakers can simply substitute a gluten-free cake mix.

The response online has been enthusiastic, with Bec’s video racking up over 600,000 views and drawing a flood of comments from people eager to customise the recipe.

Add-ins like canned cherries, sultanas, corn flakes, and chocolate chips have turned the humble mix into all sorts of fun twists.

‘I have another popular video using the choc cake mix where you mix that and a can of cherries, add some coconut and choc chips (dairy-free of course) and you get cherry ripe muffins!’ she said.

‘You can use most cake mixes and any tin of fruit for a cheap and tasty cake trick .’

Bec encouraged others to treat the base recipe as a jumping-off point, saying it was all about creativity in the kitchen.

‘I’d love to see what other combinations people come up with,’ she added.

‘And most importantly, I’m just so pleased to be able to help share awareness around creating delicious recipes for those with allergies.’

‘Often people assume that allergy-friendly means bland and boring, but I hope this, along with my other recipe hacks on my page, proves that myth wrong and encourages others to try this hack as well as others. Eating delicious food should be for everyone!’

If you’re keen on quick, budget-friendly treats, it’s also worth considering what’s really going into your favourite snacks.

While some recipes might seem like harmless fun, added sugars can quietly stack up and affect your health over time.

That’s why taking a closer look at hidden sugar in everyday foods could be the smartest kitchen trick of all.
