Red Rattler Trains

Who Remembers riding in A Red Rattler train, with the dark green seats and the dirty windows that were hard to open and this was the only form of air conditioner

To get on and off the train you had to open the heavy door yourself

It was a normal thing to ride the trains with the doors open and you would see a person or two hanging out of them.
They would only be closed on rainy days.

At one stage you could smoke in every carriage and then only one carriage was dedicated as a non smoking carriage

And let's not forget how the Red Rattler got its name...it rattled so much you had to shout to talk.
Imagine the youth of today using these trains

The Red Rattlers I remember had swing doors. There were Smoking and Non-Smoking carriages and every one of them had a 'NO Spitting' sign in them. The seats were wooden and unpadded and they had highly polished brass luggage racks. That was a looong time ago.
