Recent unauthorised PayPal activities

Over the past 2 weeks, Paypal has deposited multiple deposits into my PayPal account. There were 6 x $196 placed there, and overnight there ere 12 x $278 (approximately), These were clearly unauthorised transactions, quickly disputed by the "Buyers", and Paypal had classified the total amounts as Pending, subject to review.
When I saw these in my morning catch-up, I nearly had a seizure: how some $1,800 and $3,600 can be randomly taken from someone's account and placed into mine. Why would someone do that, unless there's a process down the track that may take money from my account.
I wrote a scathing letter back to PayPal asking how secure is their system, and whether I should seek legal advice.
The first incident, I quickly processed refunds back to the Buyer, but today I told PayPal to sort out their problem.
Has anybody else experienced this issue? I'd like to see if this is a common experience.

That is bazaar. I personally wouldn't be sending the money back, by returning the money, you might be laundering the funds and making it look like a legitimate source. I'd be notifying PayPal and let them take reqd action to move the money as legally required.

This morning I found that PayPal has decided to refund the money, however they claim that I'm now in debit and must replay the $3,000 odd dollars.
I exploded, investigated my account and found that a Citibank account was linked, unbeknownst to me, so I responded to PayPal and told them they were facilitating illegal transactions, and I had no intention to repaying anything. Perhaps the police should get involved if they wouldn't resolve it post haste.
I demanded a resolution, and expected an apology, and that I would wear no costs from this fiasco.
