Recall: This popular health supplement could be putting you at risk

We all want to do what we can to boost our health and well-being, but sometimes even the most well-intentioned of us can accidentally put our health at risk.

This is the case with a recent recall of a popular Australian health supplement, JSHealth Vitamins' Detox + Debloat tablets.

According to Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), the reason for the recall is that these tablets – which are used to help relieve abdominal bloating and support the body's natural detoxification process – do not include necessary warning statements on their labels.

This means that pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, as well as children under 12 years old, could be accidentally taking the mentioned product that contains ingredients that may not be safe for them.

The particular ingredient in question is Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) seeds, which contain a chemical component that has been linked to potential risks for pregnant or breastfeeding women, and children under 12 years old.

As the affected batches of this product do not have warning statements advising against use by these groups, there is a very real possibility that people could end up taking them without knowing about the risks first.

The batch numbers affected are:
  • B23434
  • B23441
  • B23462
  • B23463
  • B23485
  • B211091
  • B211111
  • B211161
  • B211231
  • B211341

In a statement that was provided to a news source, JSHealth explained that the recall was only due to a problem with the product's labelling.

'This is solely a labelling matter based on older stock, not anything to do with the product itself. The ingredients are not affected, and the product formulation remains unchanged,' they said.

'This only relates to Detox + Debloat. This product label recall does not affect any other JSHealth products.'

Any listed medication that contains fennel seed extract is obliged by Australian law to have three warnings advocating the avoidance of the drug by the aforementioned categories (pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and children under the age of 12).

We understand that taking supplements can be an important part of people's health routines, but it's vital to remember that they are not regulated in the same way as medications.

In other words, we should always exercise caution when purchasing and ingesting any dietary supplement, no matter how well-known or respected the brand may be.

If you're unsure about whether a supplement is right for you, always check with your GP first. Stay safe and healthy, everyone!
