A
Reaching for the Stars!
Note from the Editor:
This article was kindly written for the SDC by member @Doctor Alan.
I often wonder why a lot of us hope to be ‘remembered’. I assume it’s because we want our little lives to mean something. We can’t all be rich and famous – or infamous! It was a revelation to me to find that a hugely popular group like The Beatles was largely unknown by the new generation, and that’s quite a short time in human evolutionary terms. (I’d mentioned the Beatles to my year eight students, but a lot of them hadn’t heard of them.) Also, history gets badly distorted sometimes, including history concerning major events.
It is with these thoughts in mind that I write this article about the many so-called ‘Stars’ that my wife and I have met and photographed and who have signed their autographs for us.

What a great story and Alan you are a very dedicated husband.
As a teenager I was one who also collected autographs including whole bands like America . They played at a small gig in Sydney and after I was able to get autographs, plus a chat.
I had also got autographs from ACDC when they performed at the opera house in the early 70s.
A friend of ours was a good friend of Leo Sayer and actually let him stay in his house in Watson's Bay Sydney, and we were invited to dinner with Leo as another dinner guest. He was so down to earth and such a lovely man.
I came to a point in my life where I asked myself why am I collecting autographs? These people are humans just like us except they have a certain talent. What was a signature going to do !! I stopped chasing autographs.
I don't know where any of those signatures are now. They are probably somewhere in my attic.
The only signature I have gotten over the past few years was that of an ex Australian Cricket captain and that was in his first book and I didn't chase it as we are friends .

One thing for sure & certain. You have let us all know of your wife's & your famous exploits.
I might start & write about my exploits as well to post for interesting reading. Any one else going to join the band waggon ?
It's a free for all.
I reckon "VEGGIE" could well help out here with contributions.

I have had some interesting meetings with "famous" people from world famous musicians, to high achieving sportspeople to Penthouse Pets of the Month to Australian politicians to a hobo in the street.
Want to know the difference between these people when compared to you and me? THERE IS NONE! Just a bunch of flesh and bones.
I have never have and never will hold any of these people "in awe" because of their "status". In the main, they are ordinary people.
And yes @Suzanne rose, I could write a book on my life experiences that would rival Tolstoy's "War And Peace" for sheer volume!

I'm a little nobody from nowhere but the thousands of people I have met in my short 63 years in life have all been life changing too me. A lot were not so called famous but also a lot were. And I count my lucky stars that most of these people took the time to say quick or longer greeting too me. I never really say or write their names as mostly I have no proof of our encounters but my own memories.

There's nor never has been any difference, they all pull their knickers on the same way we do one leg ata time. The only ones I ever met socially although loath to admit to were the old benders Maxie, Danny (I'm not a poof) Larue.I have had some interesting meetings with "famous" people from world famous musicians, to high achieving sportspeople to Penthouse Pets of the Month to Australian politicians to a hobo in the street.

My closest experience with famous actors, was when I was 20 and visited a close, recently deceased, 2nd cousin who was the contract lawyer, for over 30 years, at Metro Goldwyn Meyer in Hollywood.
I had the unbelievable experience of meeting all the "Dallas" stars and literally bumping into David Carradine, amongst others.
I was also invited on a date by one of the young directors, to join him with my cousin and cousin's best friend the late Larry Hagman, with his wife.
Sadly and somewhat regrettably to this day, I declined as I was already with a partner of 4 years.
However, I ended up in a nightclub 'The Cave", with my cousin and another close friend's family, Telly Savalos.
Will always remain my best and most loving memory of cousin Ben!
