Racist remarks could land you a fine of up to $55,000—learn more about the latest legislation now

Racial hatred and anti-Semitic acts have sparked a major legal shift, with new laws now in place to crack down on public incitement of such hate.

What started as an effort to address escalating tensions has rapidly transformed into a serious push for change, putting the spotlight on how laws are evolving to protect communities.

New laws introduced in New South Wales aimed to tackle anti-Semitism and racist crimes, imposing severe penalties for offenders.

The state government had taken swift action in response to a troubling increase in racist incidents, including graffiti and vandalism in Sydney.

Under the new legislation, anyone making racist remarks publicly could face up to two years in jail and fines reaching $11,000.

The government had made it clear that these tougher measures were necessary to ensure perpetrators faced the full force of the law.

The bill, which was presented in parliament on 13 February 2025, specifically targeted public incitement of racial hatred.

'Racial hatred is unacceptable – and under this new legislation, it will be a crime to publicly and intentionally incite racial hatred,' said Attorney-General Michael Daley.

He emphasised the importance of protecting community members from actions that instil fear of violence, harassment, or intimidation.

The Crimes Amendment would introduce a new offence under section 93ZAA of the Crimes Act 1900.

This would carry a penalty of up to two years behind bars and fines of $11,000 for individuals.

Corporations found guilty of the offence could face penalties of up to $55,000.

The move followed a series of anti-Semitic attacks that had shaken Sydney and Melbourne, including firebombings and the defacement of properties with swastikas.

In response, a special task force had been established by NSW Police to focus on these targeted crimes.

The government remained committed to balancing free speech, noting that the new laws would not infringe upon political discourse or religious teachings.

'It is important for members of our community to be protected from conduct that causes them to fear for their safety, or to fear harassment, intimidation or violence,' Daley had added.

Another measure, introduced in the same legislative package, criminalised graffiti at religious sites.

There were also laws aimed at preventing harassment of worshippers attempting to access places of worship such as synagogues, churches, or mosques.

However, some civil rights groups had raised concerns about the potential for abuse of these laws during protests or demonstrations near religious institutions.

Despite a November 2024 review that had advised against expanding such laws, the government pushed forward with its reforms.

The introduction of these laws comes at a time when public incitement of hatred was increasingly under scrutiny in Australia.

In a previous story, we covered a heated exchange caught on tape in a public car park that sparked debate about racism.

This incident highlights just how quickly tensions can escalate in everyday situations.

  • These measures were in response to escalating anti-Semitic incidents in Sydney and Melbourne, including graffiti and firebombings, with a special taskforce set up by NSW Police to address the issue.
  • Despite concerns from civil rights groups about potential abuses of the laws, the government pressed ahead, ensuring that the new laws wouldn't infringe on free speech or religious teachings.

With these new laws in place, it’s clear that tackling racial hatred is a top priority for the government.

But do you think these tougher penalties will be enough to curb hate speech? Could they have unintended consequences?

I am truly sorry for your misfortune that you suffered and the scars you bear as a continuous reminder, at the hands of criminals who used religion as an excuse, and I too have a friend in Sydney who I refer to as a lapsed Muslim because she too enjoys wine and pork.
I think we have fallen off the wagon, the rent-a-crowds that turn up for these protests and sit ins are anything but true believers of anything but the dollars they are getting paid and the likes they get online. And also it is the Shari Law fanatics that are the ones who need to be reminded that they came here to get away from all that.
I asked my husband once where exactly is Palestine? He said it no longer exists because like all things in the middle east over the years one ruler slays another and land changes hands and that's it. Then Pommies and the UN get involved and someone says oh you can now live here, is it called Palestine, no it's called the Gaza. He also told me that Jordan once took 25,000 Palestinians, because they had nowhere to go and they tried to stage a Coup d'état and the King order them all to be executed. Why do you think no other country in the middle east will accept these poor hard done by innocent souls. Most of them, in fact the majority of them are Muslim.
Last year, a couple of months before Christmas, at Booragoon Westfield, Perth, about ten or so pro-Palestine protestors were chanting rubbish on a crowded Saturday afternoon.

All but one was visibly non Muslim, pasty white skin with blonde or red hair and freckles.

What right did they have to stage this protest? I passed through the middle of these Muslim apologists and asked "What are you c**ts doing here?" The fear on their faces was comical! "Security" were clueless!

I proceeded to Centre Management to make a formal complaint but unfortunately they were "closed". How convenient!

If I staged a pro-Israeli protest along with Israeli and Jewish mates, I would be shut down immediately! Double standards as witnessed in Sydney and Melbourne where Israeli supporters were escorted away from pro-Palestine protests.

It's not just a Muslim etc. problem, it's everything, everywhere. I have an good aboriginal mate, I've known forever, who's a maintenance worker in our local arcade, and met working in kitchens together, whenever we bump into each other, because he's a expat banana bender,I say hey Murri! and he replys hey snowflake! Murri means in general a Qld aboriginal and in NSW as I'm aware is Koori. Anyway, after our g'day exchange in the arcade one day awhile back, a white couple (20ish) had a go at me but said nothing to Tony, got up me for saying a word which is neither racist or condescending, but because he replied with snowflake as usual, they obviously thought i was being racist, well I didn't have to say a word, after Tony had calmly but with a little attitude given them a pretty good tounge lashing including minding their own business, they apologised to us both and left with their tales between their legs. Just go's to show just how uneducated and how fast to react without basic knowledge of what their protesting about on most topics, these so called lovers of peace and diversity are. Most haven't even had a life yet let alone lived one.😘✌️.

Thats odd, because my neighbor in the lower Blue Mountains was made to take down his flagpole carrying an Australian flag. Wonder how he gets away with it?🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Seriously, this is Australia and those who want to should be able to fly an Aussie flag. I wouldn't mind putting a few aussie flags around my area

I proudly had an Australian 🇦🇺 flag flying from a pole on my upper floor balcony at the previous place I lived in. The pole was made of wood and eventually the sun, wind and rain took its toll. But I had it flying for a number of years and was never told to remove it.

I hope this cleans up the surrounding areas near me which are predominantly Moslem.
Cars are driving around with Palestinian flags and openly show hatred for Jewish people .

I knew a couple of Christian ladies who would go to Lakemba and sing Christian songs and hand out pamphlets. Then complaints were put into council apparently from the Mosque and they were told they would receive a large fine if they continued.

What I find is not right is every second shop flying a Palestinian flag and on the top face of the shops there are huge signs stating Allah is the only God.
I think religious signs should be only at the place of worship and only Australian flags should be flying.
In Lakemba there is not one Australian flag.

Hatred needs to be stamped out.
A big mistake I believe is how different nationalities made certain suburbs their own.
If you walk through Lakemba it's Like walking the streets in a middle eastern country.

It's OK when it's reversed. So they reckon.

Who is this person?

EDIT: This guy has a Star of David hanging around his neck. I'm confused!
She is another Egyptian Moslem, but is sick of all the lies and horror that her people have caused. To defend the truth she has spoken up and been kicked out of Egypt. I'm not sure if she joined the other 2 million Muslims and Christians living in Israel or is living in USA.❤️
This proves there are a lot of good Muslims, unfortunately not enough,

Many of these comments are disgraceful and I do not believe representative of the majority of decent Australians.

Are you condoning the numerous acts of violence and racial vilification exacted on real Australians at the hand of alien imports?

Is that because almost the majority of "Australians" weren't born here or have one or both parents not born in Australia?

In 2023, 30.4% of "Australians" were born overseas, while a massive 48% have a parent born overseas.

If you care to argue this fact, take it up with the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Do you think only white people are racists?
Blacks are just as racist if not more. The sperm donor of my daughters 3 children was black American and all we ever heard was at Xmas he would be saying to my daughter this is a white man's tradition why do I need to be here. We would gear tge something at Easter and so many other things we did. It's a white man's tradition . He would make comments how white man were stupid and Blackman smarter than we knew.

It was a constant running anyone who was not black down. I asked him then why was he with my daughter if he was so racist against whites.

He ended up running off with a Tongan woman but not before both lived at my daughters with their 3 kids. All my daughter copped from this Tongan woman was that she was white shit and white trash.
If only I knew this was happening at the time I would have confronted the woman and my sons the soerm donor.

Not sure why it's not known how much racism there is against whites. This also happens from the Arab people

Try visiting the “black areas” of the USA! It’s a real eye opener. Some are not shy about letting anyone white know just how superior the black person is.

I was very uncomfortable being a passenger on a city bus (in a predominantly black area), where my husband and I were the only whites on a very crowded bus. We got some very disparaging looks.

Sure, there are plenty of white racists. But the whites seem to be the most criticised and brought to attention a lot more often.

And according to the "do-gooders" of this world, reverse racism is a myth, where white people are victimised by people of "colour".

We call these people "ni**er, slope, curry muncher and camel jockey" and we are suddenly the greatest arseholes in the world.

But it's perfectly permissible for them to call white Australians "white shit, Aussie trash and Aussie wog"!

Double standards must be broken down and I will stand at the forefront of it.

I really don't care what they call me....

It's really what they do, not what they say... BUT, it STARTS with what they SAY!!!!
