Qantas steps up in-flight menu game with more meal options

As many of us know, air travel can be pretty stressful – especially when you’re trying to get to your destination on time and have to deal with delays, cancellations, grumpy passengers and cramped quarters.

But one of the things that makes flying a bit more bearable is the thought of enjoying a tasty in-flight meal. Alas, nowadays it seems like airlines are skimping more and more on the food offerings.

One company that has been working hard to improve its in-flight dining experience is Qantas.

After receiving criticism for the lack of menu options available during a flight from Adelaide to Sydney, Qantas has made efforts to boost its range – though some customers still feel there could be more improvements made.

Recently, Qantas was criticised for not having enough food options on its flights. Credit: YouTube/Qantas.

Speaking with a news source recently, DoSomething Foundation Managing Director Jon Dee claimed there was still a lack of options available on some domestic haul flights and criticised the snack offering dealt out on shorter trips.

'I'd really like to see Qantas come back to the standard we're used to,' Mr Dee said. 'If they're not going to start providing the wider food offering…I'm going to consider switching to Virgin.'

'Virgin's food offering is wider… On Qantas at the moment you're not getting a meal that's going to fill you up.'

The claim, however, was refuted by a Qantas representative, who told the news source that there are many menu varieties available and that economy passengers on domestic flights often have the choice of a meat or vegetarian meal during their flight.

Other good news is that, in October, Qantas launched its new food menu service, which features items such as ham and egg hollandaise ciabatta, zucchini and corn fritters, gluten-free and plant-based chocolate caramel slice, and pear and ginger cake.

The new menu caters to several dietary requirements and includes a vegetarian option for all meals, so customers with dietary requirements can rest assured they’ll be catered for.

'Qantas is continuing to invest in product and service as we work to get back to our best,' Qantas Executive Manager of Product and Service Phil Capps said in a statement.

'We have been progressively returning normal service levels and last month we fast-tracked the return of vegetarian options on all flights.'
Key Takeaways

  • A few months ago, a Qantas passenger who was flying from Adelaide to Sydney made headlines when he criticised the airline for its lack of vegetarian options.
  • Qantas has denied this, noting that all passengers, regardless of ticket class, are offered a choice between meat and vegetarian meals during domestic flights.
  • When the pandemic hit, Qantas only offered a limited meal selection in an effort to cut costs. In October, however, the airline unveiled a brand-new menu.
We hope that other airlines will follow Qantas' lead and make an effort to improve in-flight dining experiences as well. Flying shouldn’t have to be such a headache – especially when it comes to finding something decent to eat!

Members, have you flown with Qantas recently? If so, what did you think of the in-flight meal options? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Idiots the lot of them to think by telling the regular flying public they have lots of choice especially when they have just got off a plane The poor food quality, usually can’t tell the difference between the food and the packaging it comes and the Cabin crew who simply don’t want to be there.
Unfortunately without true competition industries work toward the lowest common denominator. Both domestically and internationally QANTAS worked downwards instead of aiming for the best Airlines.

Flew to Lord Howe Is. and back just previous to Christmas. Food provided was perfectly adequate for a short journey. No complaints.

I flew Wagga to Sydney , 1 hour flight , with Qantas and had food supplied free of charge then Sydney to Coolangatta , 1 hour flight , with Virgin where you had to pay for the food if you wanted to eat . The way I see it , free food , regardless of the choices provided is better than having to pay for your food . The price of a plane ticket sets you back enough without having to pay for food as well
