Qantas flight faces unexpected detour: Passengers left stranded for hours

Travelling can be an exhilarating experience, offering a chance to explore new horizons and cultures.

However, for passengers aboard Qantas flight QF2 from London to Sydney, their journey took an unexpected and uncomfortable detour that left them feeling more grounded than uplifted.

The flight, which included a scheduled stopover in Singapore, had been cruising for just over three hours when it abruptly changed course over the Black Sea.

The Airbus A380 landed unscheduled at Istanbul Airport in Turkey at 12:45 pm (AEST) on a Tuesday, leaving passengers puzzled and concerned.

A medical emergency caused the diversion—a passenger required urgent care, prompting the pilot to make the critical decision to land.

While the crew's swift action to assist the unwell passenger, who was reportedly seriously ill but alive, was commendable, it led to an unforeseen consequence for the rest of the travellers.

The remaining passengers were stranded on the tarmac for a gruelling two-and-a-half hours.

During this time, they were confined to the packed cabin without running water in the bathrooms.

The airline did text passengers explaining that they were working on getting clearance to continue the journey and advised everyone to stay on board to facilitate a prompt departure.

However, the conditions inside the aircraft were far from comfortable.

Passengers reported that the air conditioning was barely functioning, and with only water available to drink, the soaring temperatures made the wait increasingly unbearable.

The Qantas crew's initial lack of information added to the frustration, leaving passengers in the dark about the reason for the diversion.

The flight attendants were praised for their professionalism and kindness throughout the ordeal despite the inconvenience.

Their efforts to maintain a calm and supportive environment under challenging circumstances did not go unnoticed by the passengers.

Eventually, the flight resumed its journey towards Singapore, taking off from Istanbul shortly before 2:30 pm.

The passengers, no doubt relieved to be moving again, would likely remember this trip for reasons they never anticipated.

In other news, Flight QF596 encountered an issue with its hydraulic system that affected its steering after landing.

Due to the system malfunction, 120 passengers were forced to stay in the plane, which was left grounded on the tarmac for about five hours.

Multiple other Qantas flights were also cancelled or diverted. You can read more about it here.

Lack of communication to the passengers is the worst possible thing that can happen as people become angry and frustrated when they do not understand what is going on around them. Qantas is not doing well in the reputation department at the moment. I can remember when they were the safest airline to fly with in the world. Not so much now sadly.

Although it was no fault of Qantas in the first place, how they handled it going forward was. There is no way I would be able to sit there for 2 hours not able to use toilet facilities. That is just ridiculous when multiplied by the number of passengers.

Why weren’t the passengers told the reason they landed unexpectedly ? They must have worried about all sorts of terrible things that might be happening !
I’ve done that trip a few times not with Qantas, the worst one was being stuck in Abu Dabi for a few hours because of flooding. 🤷‍♀️

Nothing to do with safety, it was the health of a passenger. Would you not wish the plane to divert if your life was threatened????? But yes the Captain should have kept passengers informed. Possibly the outside temperature may have made it feel like the a/c wasn't working properly.

Qantas has to be the worst airline. We have never encountered any international flight delay with any other airline. All the business class lounges have been excellent and the food superb. Service was excellent.
Last year we had to fly Qantas business….never again. Service is non existent, they treat you as though they are doing you a favour. Terrible attitude. The business class lounge was awful, it was like walking into a school canteen, the food was on a small counter with very little choice and did not look very inviting at all. Seating area was shoddy and uncomfortable and to top all this we had a 12 hour delay, apparently this is very common with Qantas. I do not recall having any flight delays with any other airline.
This seems to be the attitude with Australia now. Prices are increasing at an alarming rate but they are not increasing service Or giving value for money.

My wife & self have flown to America, Hong Kong twice & China, all by Qantas. We hadn't experienced any probs with them at all.
