Product Safety Australia issues urgent recall on popular shoe accessories

In a surprising turn of events, a popular accessory for the well-loved Crocs footwear has been urgently recalled due to a hidden danger that could pose a serious risk to children.

The Crocs Jibbitz, small decorative charms that can be attached to the holes in Crocs shoes, have been a fun way for wearers to personalise their footwear.

However, it has come to light that some of these Jibbitz sold at City Beach stores across Australia contain button batteries, a detail that may have escaped the notice of many consumers.

The recall, announced on Tuesday, March 26, affected six different battery-operated Jibbitz products that feature a light-up function.

If these button batteries are ingested, they can cause fatal injuries within a matter of hours.

Product Safety Australia issued the recall, highlighting the lack of required warning information on the products, and the severe risks they pose.

'Consumers may be unaware that the product contains button batteries,' the recall notice stated.

‘The products do not include the required warning information.’

‘Risk of choking, severe internal burn injuries or death to young children if they gain access to the button/coin batteries and swallow them or place them inside their body.’

‘Severe or fatal injuries can happen in two hours or less,’ it continued.

The products in question include an 'under the sea' themed five-pack, a 'cacti' five-pack, and the 'LED FUN' five-pack.

Additionally, individual Jibbitz designs such as the 'Cactus Purple Flower,' 'Sun', and 'Electric Blue Daisy' are also part of the recall.

These items were sold not only in City Beach stores across Australia, but also online to international customers, from June 22, 2022, to March 1, 2024.

‘Consumers should stop using these products immediately, and store them out of reach of children,’ the recall suggested.

For those who have purchased any of the affected Jibbitz, they can be returned to any City Beach store for a full refund.

Customers seeking more information or assistance can contact City Beach via email at [email protected] or by phone at 1800 640 811.

From the hidden dangers lurking in seemingly harmless shoe accessories to the alarming prevalence of injuries caused by malfunctioning footwear, safety concerns have recently taken centre stage in the realm of consumer products.
