White Lies Brewing Company issued a recall on one of its popular craft beers, the Hazy Craze NEIPA 500mL ($40) (4-pack).

The recall was initiated due to an unexpected secondary fermentation process that has resulted in excess alcohol and carbonation levels that could potentially cause illness or injury if consumed.


The affected product's best-before date is February 1, 2025, and was distributed widely.

It is available for purchase at First Choice Liquor stores throughout Queensland and served at the Sumner and Seventeen Mile Rocks taprooms.

Secondary fermentation is a natural process that can occur in bottled beers, where residual yeast continues to ferment the remaining sugars, producing additional alcohol and carbon dioxide.

While this can sometimes be a deliberate part of the brewing process to enhance flavour and carbonation, in this case, it has gone beyond the intended levels, leading to a product that doesn't meet the brewery's stringent quality standards.


Food Standards Australia New Zealand, the governing body responsible for food safety and regulation, issued a statement regarding the recall: ‘Food products containing excess alcohol and carbonation may cause illness [or] injury if consumed.’

‘Consumers should not drink or open this product and should dispose of it safely.’

‘Please contact White Lies Brewing Company for safe disposal instructions and reimbursement.’

‘Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice,’ it continued.
