Problem with Vicroads

Perplexing ordeal with Vicroads
Hi everyone I would like to tell you about an issue we are currently having with Vicroads.

My husband decided he may have a memory problem because he was forgetting past holiday dates and things like the symbols of metals and gasses on the periodic table,

He got a referral to a Geriatrician whom he saw 4 times over a 2 year period. On the last visit the Geriatrician said he was sending a medical report to Vicroads stating he had no problem with my husband driving.

2 weeks after we received a letter from Vicroads asking for a medical report from his GP. Which the GP sent also stating he had no problems with his driving.

2 weeks after Vicroads send another letter telling my husband he was to undertake an Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment. This letter had perhaps 50 OT names which we could ask to do this Assessment. We contacted about 8 and were quoted between $800 to $1000 for the OT and the driving Instructor Assessments to be paid by us.

If these are not undertaken my husbsnds licence will be cancelled.

My husband has been driving for 63 years with no accidents and only a couple of speeding fines.

He drives better than a many of the maniacs currently allowed on the roads.

Moral of the story stay away from Geriatricians.

Regards
Heather

My doctor referred me to a similar specialist, after tests I was told that my blood sugar was continuly too low .
I was not told that he would email Vicroads, but he did + my license was suspended until a doctor could
affirm that my blood sugars were being kept up !

driving is not your right it's a privilege and at 80years old your reflexes slow down. shore it's hard on your not to have the freedom driving gives you, think there is a lot more traffic now then when we first started to drive we not only have to think about ourselves but the safety of others PLEASE don't get angry at these words but I was run over at 28 by an 80year old an i suppose this gives me some bias but it comes a time to hang up your licence i am think about my driving and when to give up and i am in my 60s do the right thing and you might save a life.

"My husband has been driving for 63 years with no accidents and only a couple of speeding fines."

You don't need to be in the accident, to cause accidents with your driving. Veering or turning into traffic for example will cause other drivers to take offensive action, often with disastrous results, while the car that caused it trundle off in the distance.

Wouldn't you rather know your husband is a safe driver by being tested, than finding out by him getting himself or someone else killed?

I believe everyone should have a driving test every 10 years & from 70 every 5 years with a qualified driving instructor. As people age peripheral vision & reaction time is reduced. There are also many that are oblivious to new road rules & cause chaos on the roads.

If the husband is forgetting things then there is a chance his mind is also wondering and not concentrating on the road, should he forget where he is he could possibly become anxious and cause an accident. I would say it's time to hang up the car keys before someone gets hurt.

So what about all those under 40 who have accidents? Should they also have to give up their licences. By all means make them sit for another licence test, as I believe everyone should do a refresher every 5 years. Younger people also have changing medical conditions

And yet the government would like you to still work until you’re 70. So in your opinion indépendance ends at 70. you must be a very old 60 year old to think that way.

I have to go yearly for health check for licence renewal, mental capacity and reflexes. I would willing go for a driving test . A friend of mine failed some questions so they denied her licence she applied again and it will cost her $400 when the lady has to come out from Perth to test her. This year had to have a new photo so until that was done and signed my signature licence was invalid. Got my licence 2 days before old one expired another friend didn't receive hers until 9 days after expiral date

I am not at all an old 60, opposite in fact! The reason I think people of ALL ages should be re-tested is because over the years rules change & the congestion on roads has increased, as well as the introduction of expressways. There are many people who do not know the road rules, which is blatantly obvious by the way they drive. This would keep people safer on the roads. Mostly little things that obstruct traffic such as not positioning your car fully in a turning lane, swinging out to turn a corner, cutting corners, not indicating, not knowing how to merge properly, blocking the path of cars turning across main roads when traffic is banked up. Many people develop bad driving habits which would be picked up on driving tests.

Totally agree with you. Without the threat of licence loss following a regular test, humans could and many do become complacent. Regular testing would keep everyone on their toes.
