Postal nightmare: Australia Post worker stole $400,000 in packages from customers

With deliveries now a routine part of daily life, ensuring their safe arrival has never been more important.

However, a recent case has raised serious concerns about mail security, as a postal worker was sentenced to jail for a series of thefts that left many customers without their expected parcels.

The incident has sparked discussions about trust in the postal system and what can be done to protect valuable deliveries better.

The 43-year-old Sydney man, employed as a contractor, was sentenced in Downing Centre District Court after pleading guilty to a series of offences.

The case unveiled a staggering array of stolen goods and illegal substances.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) launched an investigation in May 2023 following a tip-off about the contractor's illicit activities.

Upon executing a search warrant at his Bexley residence, officers discovered a hoard of valuables pilfered from packages over 18 months, from November 2021 to May 2023.

The recovered items included an incredible $138,000 worth of alcohol, $124,000 in luxury watches, $52,000 in gift cards, and $43,000 in jewellery.

Additionally, the AFP found $39,000 in cash, believed to be the proceeds from selling stolen tobacco.

But the man's criminal activities didn't stop at theft.

The search also uncovered border-controlled drugs, including methamphetamine, ketamine, cocaine, MDMA, and cannabis, adding a sinister layer to the already serious offences.

The contractor pleaded guilty to dishonestly appropriating articles in the course of post to permanently deprive the owners of possession of a controlled drug and deal with proceeds of crime over $10,000.

His sentence of two years in prison, with the possibility of release after 15 months on a good behaviour order, reflects the gravity of his actions.

AFP Acting Superintendent Stuart Millen issued a stern warning to those in positions of trust, emphasising that the AFP has zero tolerance for such abuses of power.

'Criminals are motivated by profit and greed, and the AFP has zero tolerance for those who abuse employment access for their own illegal pursuits,' he said.

'This was an opportunistic attempt to use a trusted position within Australia's mail delivery system to profit, with no regard to its impact on the community.'

For our members, this story is a reminder of the importance of vigilance when it comes to our mail.

While Australia Post and law enforcement agencies work diligently to safeguard the postal system, it's clear that no system is impervious to the machinations of determined criminals.

To protect your deliveries, consider tracking your packages, using secure delivery options like lockers or requiring a signature, and reporting any suspicious activity to authorities.

Insuring valuable items can provide extra protection against theft or damage while staying informed about postal alerts ensures you're aware of any changes or potential risks.

The AFP's collaboration with Australia Post to root out corruption and ensure the integrity of the postal system is ongoing.

However, this case is a cautionary tale for all Australians to remain alert and proactive in protecting their mail.

In other news, a former Sydney Airport freight handler has been sentenced to over three years in jail for stealing electronics and dealing with the proceeds of crime.

He used his access to air cargo to steal items, later selling them for nearly $450,000. You can read more about it here.

Clearly the ACT judiciary don't share the AFP's zero tolerance of crime policy.

It probably took longer for the AFP to go through the excruciatingly slow processes of prosecuting him than he will spend in prison

The sentence shows the severity of the crime????
The sentencing in Australian courts is a joke. There is no deterrent in that sentence at all. He stole in excess of $400,000 and could be out in 15 months.
That's laughable.
I was about to say the same thing. Fifteen months in prison is hardly anything to this thief. He should have been sentenced to at least 10 years & we need to bring back the added penalty of "with Hard Labour". Prisons these days are a walk in the park for many with all the things they have while they are there. It is a punishment, not a picnic & needs to be treated as such by the authoritties.

Just prior to Christmas 2021 I was awaiting a package which I was tracking. I got the msg ‘delivered’ whist I was out.
No parcel at door, checked the accompanying photo of proof of delivery in msg. Photo only showed the face of the box without surrounds of doorway. Subsequent follow-up obtained replacement of goods and further investigation.

A program on tele showed this new idea for prisoners being housed with no bars just one big room full of cubicles where prisoners can move around and socialise

I have recently been told, if a male has been raped in jail they can claim compensation amounting to the figure of $45,000. I don’t know if that is true but I was shocked to learn that. What is all this costing us. I know people can get compensation for witnessing domestic abuse my grandson got quite a lot of money for that.

Hopefully he is going to get a hefty $$$$$$ fine too He's got a Police Record so he'll never get another job.
The taxpayer is paying for him to live now.

$400,000 worth he has stolen and if he served the 2 year sentence that is $200,000 per year . No mention of having to pay any money back . Not bad money wages free Bed and board . AND if it is true I read in one other comment he is raped in court the big compensation payout he can receive HE is sitting on a GOLDMINE! The jails will be overcrowded .

Punishments should be made to fit the crime without taking into account that this is a person who's welfare must be taken into account. Is he remorseful for his crime? Why did he keep all that stolen property & not sell it on? Was he hoping to be caught?

Not sure about other states, but in W.A. dependant on the job done in prison, a prisoner will receive a small daily numeration which can be used at the Canteen to purchase goods, food items, cigarettes etc. (for self consumption or sometimes to pay gambling debts).
