Port city Fremantle is among the world’s greatest places in 2022, according to Time magazine

You don’t have to fly out of Australia to get a travel experience that combines scenic beaches with awe-inspiring architecture.
The small Australian city of Fremantle in Western Australia has been deemed one of the best travel destinations in the world, according to Time Magazine’s network of travel correspondents and contributors. The Great Barrier Reef also made the list.
The city shares the honour with other non-Australian entries, including the Galápagos Islands, Queenstown in New Zealand, and even the not-so-accessible International Space Station (would you like to go if you could?).
Travellers who have found their way to Fremantle consider it a hidden gem. Many people have yet to see the port city even though it’s only 30 minutes away from the Perth city centre.
Will Time Magazine’s list lead to travellers flocking to the coastal city? That is to be determined, but the inclusion on the list is timely, especially after its $270-million renewal project of the Walyalup Koort, its reimagined city centre.
It gets its name from the Nyoongar name for the region, Walyalup. Meanwhile, Koort is the word for heart.
There’s something for everyone in Fremantle.
Its quaint streets are home to hawker-style stalls that offer everything from Asian cuisines such as pho and ramen, to more conventional Aussie favourites such as burgers and ice cream.
Unique bars and cafes can also be found in various nooks and crannies, with the surroundings showcasing more of the city’s personality through colourful street art.
These days, old buildings have even been converted into lively watering holes. These include the Old Courthouse where visitors can sip from up to 18 different single-malt whiskeys. Beer company Gage Roads also has a century-old warehouse turned into a brewery and bar that can seat 1,500 people.
Mediterranean-style restaurants by the Swan River are accompanied by scenic waterside and sunset views.
The music scene is also alive and well in Fremantle. In previous years, it has hosted Australia’s beloved musical talents playing different genres. These include AC/DC's Bon Scott, John Butler Trio, and Tame Impala.
For beach bums, there are also pristine white beaches with clear, turquoise waters. The strong winds creating currents make it an ideal destination for many surfers.
But Fremantle is perhaps most renowned for its rich history that dates back all the way to the 1800s. The Victorian and Edwardian buildings are among the most popular tourist spots, offering a peek into the port city’s past.
Fremantle is home to Western Australia’s oldest preserved public building. Built in 1831, the Round House was a former prison for colonial and indigenous prisoners before becoming a residence of the chief constable.
The Fremantle Prison is another must-see attraction. Included in the World Heritage list, it was an operating security gaol up until 1991.
