Poppy seeds recalled across the country due to a potential health hazard

Due to a recent incidence of foodborne illnesses caused by a dangerous chemical, poppy seeds are being urgently recalled around the country.

Poppy seeds sold at Woolworths and Coles stores in Australia in 100-gram packets and 240-gram PET jars are being recalled by Hoyts Food Manufacturing.

According to Food Standards Australia (FSA), the potential presence of thebaine from unsafe poppy seeds has contaminated food-grade products.

'Thebaine may cause illness if consumed in large amounts. Severe poisoning soon after ingestion has occurred in some people who have consumed large amounts of poppy seeds,' the organisation said in a statement.

In light of the recall, NSW Health is recommending people not consume any of the recalled products and inspect their kitchens for poppy seeds.

A spokesperson for the health agency said: 'NSW Health advises the recalled products are not safe to consume and people who have purchased these recalled batches of poppy seeds should throw them out or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.'

'Reports of unusual and severe symptoms following poppy seed consumption have now seen at least 12 people requiring medical attention in NSW after developing poisoning soon after ingestion, with additional cases nationally.'

'Symptoms of poisoning can be severe and include muscle cramping, spasms, and abnormal movements. Severe symptoms include seizures and cardiac arrest.'

According to Dr Darren Roberts, Medical Director of the NSW Poisons Information Centre, the potential health care hazards of eating the poppy seed products and the associated risks caused by the chemical traces were severe enough to warrant a warning.

He said: 'We are urging anyone who experiences any unusual and severe symptoms to seek immediate medical attention by visiting their nearest Emergency Department. Call triple-0 for emergency assistance.'

Authorities in Victoria acknowledged that two people who had eaten poppy seeds had gone into the intensive care unit, with one suffering a heart attack.

Additionally, South Australian authorities are also on the lookout for poppy seed poisoning incidents, advising citizens to dispose of any poppy seeds following the recall.

'At least one South Australian is known to have fallen ill after consuming the affected poppy seed product. It has been reported that a number of people have presented nationally to interstate Emergency Departments (ED),' a SA Health spokesperson said.

'Consumers will not be able to tell which poppy seeds have high thebaine content by looking at the seeds and are advised not to eat them.'

And yet the authorities continue to disregard the heart problems the Covid vaccines are causing.

What are we going to survive on when they take everything away from us, as it all has negative side-effects or is poisonous.
How did our fore-bears survive?
Even our air and water has potentially harmful properties and is polluted.
I wonder what will be next that we are told to avoid?

Thankyou for this update. It's good to know of any potential health risks. I avoid poppy seeds simply because they look terrible when stuck in teeth.
I had a bad reaction to the Covid vaccine whent my kidneys were affected, and after a course of milk thistle they repaired, but my health hasn't really returned to normal, so being forewarned is good.

I wrote this in 2006 to honor my new countries Military forces.
Australia at War
Even before the year of our Federation
The Commonwealth called on the men of this nation
Off to South Africa when the Boer war began
Who would ever forget the name Breaker Morant
Then the world war to end all wars
Unfortunately, this aim was full of flaws
Ypres,Cambrai,Passendaele and the Somme
Under the mud and poppies of Flanders
Many would not again see the sun
And in the desert came the Aussies, to fight the Turks and the Hun
Many young men volunteered thinking it was fun
Gallipoli saw the Anzacs, a tradition was begun
But many lost their mates before the withdrawal was finally begun
After four years of conflict and peace was finally restored
The casualties were counted, it produced a dismal record
The years rolled by and once again the war clouds started to appear
Through that infamous man Hitler many countries were full of fear
After Dunkirk came the Battle of Britain to save a nation
In the air force came the Aussies to help in England's salvation
Amongst their aces never to be forgot
Was a hero called Bluey Truscott
And all those men in Navy blue
Night after night over Europe they flew
Once again, the desert called, things had run amok
Who will ever forget the Aussies defense of Tobruk
As the Japanese approached Australia the desert troops were brought home
But after retraining, off to the jungle they were sent to roam
With the Fuzzies help and without fail
Performed their heroics on the Kokoda trail
The navy too played their part
Many ships and crews lost from the start
The massacre of valiant nurses made the blood tingle
Lucky to survive was Sister Bullwinkle
But finally, after countless years
The war was ended and there were tears
Service people returned to their homes for release
And the condition of the POW'S did not please
As in the first war the cream of the nation had been plundered
Will this be the last time people wondered
Then again in 1950 came the call North and South Korea were at war
Through the mistake of General Mc Arthur
Who went over the border and then strayed further
This gave China an excuse to enter the fray
Causing the United Nations to retreat day after day
Until an Aussie Battalion at the battle of Kapjong
Defeated a Chinese Division, an over honor was won
Then after months of heated deliberation
Peace came to a divided nation
To recognize against the enemy the Aussies constant battle
The Americans gave them a special medal
In the years to come without failure
Came a conflict to fight communists in Malayia's
Would world conflict ever end
To which Australia would her forces send
Then on the horizon came another conflict
For the first time the services included conscripts
Many had never heard the name Vietnam
For many a new experience had begun
They fought people in black pajamas
In the paddies they looked like local farmers
So, in later years came defeat
Back to their homeland forced to retreat
And I will never know why they were treated like dirt
Because the takeover of Communism they had tried to evert
And like their forefathers they had done their best
Many of them had been laid to rest
Once again Australians had given their all
We hoped that never again they would have to answer the call
But we knew this is not true
Because tyranny of nations has begun anew
the Gulf war, East Timor, Afghanistan and Irak too
Thank goodness this time casualties are few
But in the future if the bugle calls again
Rest assured the Australian nation will not refrain

Dennis Ringrose 2006 Ex Sherwood Forester's and Royal Warwickshire Regiments, thank you to anybody that has read this article I am very proud to be an Australian citizen, we arrived in 1958
