Plus-size traveller demands size-inclusive amenities, and proposes larger hallways and elevators

Jaelynn Chaney is not just any social media influencer. As a prominent voice in the plus-size fashion world, with hundreds and thousands of followers on social media, she uses her platform to advocate for more inclusion and accommodations for plus-size travellers.

Chaney's latest activism effort called on hotels worldwide to make their amenities and spaces more accessible for overweight guests.

In a recent video that has garnered thousands of views, she listed several suggestions for hotels, including widening hallways and elevator doors, providing sturdier pool chairs, and training staff to be more respectful of diverse body types.

Chaney also proposed that hotels should consider raising toilet seats and outfitting each room with handheld showerheads to facilitate easier use for individuals with larger bodies.

She emphasised the importance of size-inclusive bathrooms that cater to sizes up to 6XL and beyond. According to Chaney, this is essential to create an environment where every guest feels valued and comfortable.

'Size-inclusive hotel amenities are more than just accommodations—they're a statement of respect for diverse needs and body types,' she said.

'Let's make travel truly accessible and welcoming for travellers of all sizes and abilities.'

For Chaney, these changes are personal. As a plus-size woman who frequently travels for her career, she has experienced discomfort and exclusion due to narrow hotel hallways and small rooms.

'I'm on a mission to revolutionise the travel industry and make it a more accessible, accepting, accommodating place for all,' Chaney said.

'We deserve an environment that respects our needs and body diversity.'

Chaney's suggestions received a mixed response from online users. Some people were supportive, like one user who commented, 'I'm backing you 100 per cent.'

However, not everyone agreed.

In the comments section of her post, one person pointed out, 'I agree this is ideal, but some of these are out of the hotel's control—lift size, for example.'

Others took a more critical stance. One woman questioned, 'How are you gonna ask for things to change but refuse to change yourself?'

Another user shared, 'It [would] be cheaper to diet. I am fat, and I will let no airline or hotel pay for my eating habits.'

Some were also harsh with their words, with one user commenting: 'Imagine feeling so entitled to demand that an entire industry accommodate your inability to put down the fork.'

A few months ago, Chaney voiced concerns that airlines are being 'discriminatory' to larger passengers. She argued that it's unfair to make them pay for additional seats due to their size.

She took action by petitioning the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to push for changes in international airline policies, and her goal is to ensure that plus-sized travellers receive additional free seats when needed.

I’m afraid I think it’s ridiculous. For example if you can’t fit into an elevator or walk down a hallway then you seriously need to re evaluate your health goals.
Of course that would make good sense to the huge majority of people. Obviously not to her though. It is much easier for her to complain.

You are all being very judgmental - who is to say that this poor woman does not have some major medical condition causing her to gain and retain weight. I know that since I was diagnosed with inflammatory arthritis I have put on over 40kg and no amount of dieting has reduced it and I can barely walk let alone exercise. Airline seats have greatly reduced in width and leg space has reduced considerably since I started flying in the 60s. So many hotels only offer showers over a bath which I cannot use because I cannot move my legs enough to get into the bath. Many things could be so much better if designers followed universal design principles and it need not cost any more.

I know of a few people who suffer, like you, of Inflammatory arthritis and they can control their weight gain with exercise and selecting the food they eat. Diwting alone does not reduce weight while selecting the food you eat will do it. Cutting sugar out altogether will help as well. I have never heard of one suffering in the way you do and gaining weight at the same time with that diagnosis. Yet again I may have to believe even I don't know your circumstances.

Some people lose weight with this, others of us put it on. Not being able to exercise has certainly had a major impact. Do you seriously think that I and others have not consulted dietitians and doctors and followed their advice?

Talk about entitlement - how ridiculous is this woman. Unless there is a medical problem with weight the simple answer is keep your mouth closed and monitor what goes in it. Sorry to be blunt, but I find this really irritating. I'm 5'2" and can't reach top shelves in supermarkets. Should I ask them to supply stepladders? Of course not - deal with it.

I agree, my aunt suffers from the same and she hasn't put on weight
But she does eat a healthy diet and does some light exercise.

I'm afraid she bought some of this on herself with her ridiculous statements.
How entitled must she be to expect the whole world to revolve around her. If she expects to get two seats on a plane, then the rest of us should start expecting ours for half price as we will only be taking up half the amount of room as her.
I have very long legs, I don't expect the airline to cater exclusively for me, I book a seat near the exit and pay the extra for it, without bellyaching about it.
Maybe I could set myself up as an "influencer", and start dribbling garbage all over the internet about
how beds aren't long enough in hotel rooms, the shower heads aren't high enough, neither are the door frames, etc etc etc
Stupid woman!!
Maybe you don't like what people are saying but she sure set herself up for it. IMO.

How can someone be that large and then demand all these things.

Being that large is caused through indulgence of food.
I have never walked a hotel hallway where it hasn't been me and hubby side by side and still with plenty of room .

She wants toilets raised !! What about short people and kids 🤔 There is a standard size and anyone who doesn't fit on or in then there is something wrong with them.

A plane can hold only a certain ammount of weight that's why they have baggage restrictions . Anyone that big and she would be at least 300kg should actually be paying extra they are equal to 3, or 4 average people .

My partner and I have a friend who is a morbidly obese woman, a very pleasant personsality, intelligent, accomplished, privileged upbringing, and sensitive about her human rights. So I try to see this issue through her eyes. I wouldn't like to debate obesity with her. She'd likely win.
But my thoughts are: one who is obese should not accept that state and instead of buying so much harmful food, rather spend the money getting medical, including psychological help to overcome this serious health issue. The world around is designed around average sizes, so the goal doesn't have to be slimness, just average is fine.
So many benefits - live longer, feel better, lower medical expenses, more options of what you can do and places you can go.
While it is the individual's responsibility, there is lots of help out there. Get it.
The fatter you are, the harder it is to exercise and take action. It has to start in the head by overcoming the defeatist attitude that just accepts, 'I'm fat, I hate it, and I'm the victim here.' You are victimising yourself and you need to stop doing that, right there in your smart head.

I’m not saying she’s right! Far from it. Her suggestions are beyond ridiculous. If she needs a bigger seat on a plane, she needs to pay for two, like everyone else, however, providing seatbelt extenders would be nice. I’m overweight but not to that extent and sitting in a plane seat is fine but the seatbelts simply don’t fit! My husband is normal weight and even he has some difficulty. Anyway, that’s neither here nor there. My point was, regardless of how ridiculous her wants and so called needs, there’s no call to abuse her for being fat. She’s fat,not a sub human. She’s probably highly intelligent. She certainly has feelings. The hurtful comments were unnecessary, that’s all. Bag her stupid ideas all you want but leave her appearance out of it,is all im trying to say. We should all be better than that. And kinder.
