Phone Box Of Yesteryear

I remember these phone boxes when I was a school kid. It cost three pence to make a call, and they had a refund button to eject the coins if the call wasn’t connected.
The joke going around at the time was, if you were in trouble and needed a policeman, you just pressed the refund button, and out would come three coppers!IMG_7435.jpeg

😂😂😂

I recall turning the headset around and yelling into the earpiece and being heard at the other end without having to pay. I also remember my parents drumming into us that we should always have enough coins on us to make a call in an emergency. Ah those were the days 😁

I also remember doing this 😂😂😂

In the late 1960s, four of us were watching an old witch trying to make a call from one of those A-B button black phones. She fed numerous 5 cent pieces into it without success and ended up smashing the receiver.

The oldest of our group, Colleen, got a paddle pop stick and stuck it down the coin receptacle.

Viola!! Out came eight 5 cent pieces, enough for us to buy four chocolate paddle pops each!

What make it so unforgettable was that Colleen, 14 years old and wearing a super tight pair of lime coloured shorts, had literally pissed herself laughing.

We are still great friends to this day.

Telstra has made calls from public phone free now so then they have taken away the phones. If you don't have a mobile phone when you need it you are unable to make a call.
