Petrol is cheaper than ever in these five major cities! See how low prices have gone

As the cost of living continues to rise, plummeting prices are a welcome sight—especially when it comes to the essentials.

For seniors who still hit the road—whether it's to visit family or to run errands—there's good news on the horizon.

Petrol prices recently took a significant dip across five major Australian cities.

The dip saw petrol prices at their lowest within the past three years.

This price drop should be a breath of fresh air for budget-conscious seniors, who often feel the pinch of fluctuating fuel costs.

According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), the average price for unleaded petrol was 179.8 cents per litre during the December quarter.

The said price was a noticeable decrease from the 182.8 cents recorded in the September quarter.

The ACCC added that this price decrease has been evident in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.

Darwin saw the most substantial price drop during the said quarter, where petrol prices fell by 7.5 cents per litre.

Canberra also saw a decrease of 6.9 cents per litre.

Melbourne's average petrol price settled at 181.1 cents per litre, Brisbane at 186.4 cents, Adelaide at 175.9 cents, and Hobart at 178.2 cents.

Sydney saw the most minor reduction, with a modest fall of 1.1 cents per litre to 182.2.

These prices have been the lowest for petrol since the September quarter of 2021.

During the said period, average petrol prices were at 178.2 cents per litre.

The highest quarterly average petrol price across five major Aussie cities reached 208 cents per litre in June 2022 during a geo-political upheaval between Russia and Ukraine.

ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey shared her satisfaction with the price drop.

'It is pleasing to see that motorists had some relief when filling up at petrol stations across the country,' Commissioner Brakey stated.

The changes in petrol prices could be attributed to several factors, including lower international petrol prices due to decreased demand from major economic powers.

The price decrease could also be coupled with an increase in supply.

Geo-political events, such as conflicts in Ukraine and in the Middle East, also played a role in cooling down demand.

Additionally, central banks' interest rate hikes have contributed to this trend.

Domestically, factors such as a lower exchange rate, excise, wholesale goods and services taxes, and other wholesale and retail costs and margins have also impacted petrol prices.

According to Fuel Price Australia's real-time dashboard, the national average petrol price stands at 169 cents per litre.

Victoria and South Australia motorists could enjoy the cheapest petrol at 179 cents per litre.

Meanwhile, Northern Territory motorists face the highest prices at 218 cents per litre.

Savvy motorists also turned to fuel apps to find the best deals and when to fill their fuel tanks up with the best prices.

The Australasian Convenience and Petroleum Marketers Association reported that 41 per cent of customers have been using these kinds of apps last year alone.

Whether you're planning a road trip or need to fill up for your weekly activities, keeping an eye on petrol prices could lead to significant savings for your wallet.

We live near Townsville and use Petrol Spy to find the best deals. Today (Sunday 2 March at 9 am UP91 is $168.9 - 169.5. Coles Express is $172.9 - 4cents would be $168.9!! Lucky us!

Petrol prices PLUMMET???? I think not. Try a headline such "Petrol prices have decreased slightly".
Totally agree with you, I saw on the news the other night where a petrol station was selling fuel for $1.59 a litre, now that's a plummet. We pay $1.79 at Caltex.

A Trump lover in Australia. If you think Trump is so good, go live in America. The last thing we need is Trump ideas in Australia.
I'm a bit late here, but I have to comment.
He's getting a hell of a lot done.
Look at all the COMPLETE FRAUD that's being found with the help of Elon.
Have you noticed how all hell had broken out by the Arseholes of the world who took advantage of Sleepy Joe being at the wheel.
Now Trump is trying to fix things up.
He's probably moving too FAST for your liking.
He's certainly has the Demo's flabbergasted with his approach.

Next weekend is the Kingaroy Peanut Society Annual General Meeting in Queensland. Here is the likely president....

Hi Veggie,
Your thoughts about Mr. Peter Dutton aren't very nice at all.
Without going into "Full" detail, I'd lover to know your real thoughts on "Albo The Useless".
Surly to heavens they can't be aspiring where he's failed at every turn for all to see.

Albo is the lesser of two evils but does not carry a dark shadow that Dutton has.

Research the real reason why he left the Queensland Police Service and his great great grandfather's (Bruce Boydell Dutton) part in mistreatment of the Indigenous while he was Queensland's Lands Minister during the 1880s.

A dirty past does not stay hidden forever.

Every lying bastard politician and the oxy-morons civil servants.
Civil servant is a British term; it is not, nor has it ever been, an Australian usage. In Australia, they are public servants. As for the workers you disparage - nurses, paramedics, police officers, teachers, early childhood workers, court officials, cleaners in the buildings where the listed workers perform their duties, the list goes on - one could argue that these public servants are key to a functioning civil society. Do you honestly believe they should all be removed from their public service jobs? There are no "swamp workers" in Australia or elsewhere. They are humans, doing an often thankless job, to support human wellbeing.

You know all about dirt ‘cause you are always in it. Stop hiding behind your nickname. you have proven yourself a coward, a racist and you have even gone as far as to threaten to kill me. In addition you have dared to criticise Malta, a nation that received the George Cross for the valour it showed during WW2. You are truly the lowest of human beings.

El-Lul....

The Maltese Falcon. My hero.

Over 20 Australian individuals were awarded the George Cross but it took a WHOLE country to win a solitary medal.

You are a very stupid racist. Every citizen of Malta effectively received a George Cross which means that they had about 15,000 the number of George X recipients than the ones you mentioned but that is not to take away from those Australian recipients who were brave heroes themselves. You, on the other hand are a coward hiding behind the Veggie Patch nickname.
