Pension card holders, this Kmart perk is too good to miss!

Saving money at the checkout is always a win—especially when the cost of living keeps climbing.

But what if there was a discount available to millions of Australians each month that many simply don’t know about?

One shopper’s recent discovery has shed light on a little-known offer that could make a real difference for seniors.

Saving a few dollars at the register might not seem like much—but in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis, every little bit adds up. And now, thanks to one surprised shopper’s experience, a quiet retail policy has suddenly gained national attention.

Cecillia Therese, a 27-year-old from Brisbane, sparked curiosity after posting to social media about a surprising discovery she made at a Kmart checkout.

‘I need to know if this is a thing everywhere because I did not know about this,’ she said.

According to Cecillia, she was told by a Kmart worker that the retailer offers a special monthly discount for eligible customers—a detail she hadn’t seen advertised or promoted before.

‘I was at Kmart, no one told me,’ one person commented on social media. Another added, ‘What!! I have a pension card and shopped there today. I was at self-checkout, though.’

The post quickly gained traction online, with many Australians echoing Cecillia’s surprise.

‘I’ve never heard of this!’ one user wrote, while others admitted they had been unaware despite regularly shopping at Kmart.

The offer in question is Kmart’s Pensioner Discount Day—a little-known policy that gives eligible customers a five per cent discount off their total bill. But it wasn’t just a local promotion.

A Kmart spokesperson confirmed the discount applied nationwide and ran all year round. It was held on the first Wednesday of each month.

However, not everyone with a seniors card could access it. The discount was only available to shoppers holding a Commonwealth Government Pensioner Concession Card or a Department of Veterans’ Affairs Health Card. Commonwealth and State-issued seniors cards were not accepted.

Cecillia praised the initiative, especially given the economic climate.

‘We’re in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis and I have many family members and friends who are in receipt of pension cards for many different reasons,’ she said.

‘Kmart, usually like many people, is their first point of contact when it comes to shopping for clothes, homeware, toys etc at an affordable price.’

Despite the support for the program, Cecillia said she was surprised it wasn’t being promoted more clearly.

‘It seems like a missed marketing opportunity on their part. I think any initiative by multimillion-dollar corporations to help everyday people save money is good,’ she said.

For many eligible Australians, this quiet policy may now be a reason to circle the first Wednesday of each month on their calendars—and maybe take a second look at what other discounts are hiding in plain sight.

For many older Australians trying to stretch every dollar, knowing where to find real savings can make a world of difference.

A recent report took a closer look at another money-saving initiative designed specifically for seniors.

Since I have had a seniors card I always ask if a shop/business gives discounts it is amazing how many do. When I had my pest control done a few weeks ago I asked and received. It doesn't hurt to ask. As a self funded retiree every cent counts especially as things are so expensive today, especially specialist doctors.

I subscribe to their emails and receive the online catalogue. One thing that stood out was the price of tomatoes. A mere $5 for 2 x 1kg bags!

Look at Woolworths and Coles who have tomatoes for $12.90 a kg as of yesterday. And The Good Grocer price gougers, who are affiliated with IGA have their tomatoes for $15.99 a kg!

Coles have a feeble excuse for their price and supply issues. "Current weather conditions are to blame".

Get real! So Woolworths, Coles and IGA source their produce exclusively from the eastern states? Get f**ked liars.

I paid $70.50 this week to renew my Vic licence for 3years.

This is the first time I heard of this discount. Thankyou to the lady Cecillia who shared this savings with us all.
It appears that this is a little savi gs secret kept quiet especially for Kmart workers.
Kmart should place a big notice at each Kmart entrance notifying people about how they can save with their government consession cards, every first Wednesday of every month. Perhaps the reason for the secrecy of the savings is that Kmart may think that everyone who has a government concession card, will take advantage of the savings, and flood the stores with alot of customers, who will only come in on the first Wednesday of every month. If this was to happen, then the store would become too congested and busy for the Kmart workers, requiring more workers to be employed. 🙏🦋

Dear member Viellarde, that is interesting. I also on a pension, and from Victoria , asked if there is a discount for a 3 year renewal for drivers licence and I was told there is no discount for a 3 year renewal for drivers licence, and I had to pay ninety one dollars and thirty cents. Good Karma to you always, God bless, 🙏🦋

All these discounts certainly add up and save money for other things. Some states seem to do better than others which is unfortunate. It would be great if they all levelled up, we are meant to be one country and in my opinion should be treated as one.

As you say, interesting. I know there's a difference in cost depending on your location, but happier are they who live in Tasmania! I'm just happy I don't feel as old as my limited licence claims I am.
Cheers!

As we age we feel these local differences more. The great australian dream has shifted from owning one's home to being treated equally across the country. Still staying right where I am.

I bought two bags of Spudshed tomatoes yesterday and @DLHM is pleased to report that they were tasty and with the exception that two tomatoes were slightly soft, the rest were firm and good quality!

Win win!!

And now that COVID is back, even though on a smaller scale, they have another excuse!

Dear member Viellarde, it appears that you received the renewal licence fee for seventy five dollars and fifty cents under the The Safe Driver reward fee, which is only given to people who have not incurred any demerit points or infringement notices. Ah...if only everyone was a safe driver as you are, we would all then be much safer driving on the roads. Good Karma and many happy blessings to you always, God bless, 🙏🦋
