Pedestrian dies in collision with allegedly illegally modified bike on Mornington Peninsula

A 68-year-old man has died after being struck by an illegally modified bike believed to be travelling at high speeds on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.

Police allege the bicycle was fitted with an electric motor and may have been able to travel at speeds in excess of 80 kilometres per hour.

Footage from the scene appears to show the motor attached to the bicycle with duct tape.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the incident, which took place in Hastings, about 60km south-east of Melbourne, at about 6:40pm on Monday.

Emergency services arrived after reports of a pedestrian being struck on Frankston-Flinders Road.

The man was flown to hospital with life-threatening injuries but died on Tuesday afternoon.

The bike rider, a 24-year-old man from Hastings, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

He is yet to be interviewed.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or may have footage has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers online or on 1800 333 000.

Bikes with motorS are vehicles. Requires a drivers license, warrant of fitness and rego and be on the road like all vehicles.
Too bad they aren't legislated as such.

The disparity of laws and regulations regarding the use of electric scooters and bikes from state to state is amazing.

Age limits vary from 12 to 18. Mobile phone use, carrying of passengers and animals, substance impaired riding and use of lights at night are wildly inconsistent.

In my view, ALL vehicles must be registered, insured and regularly checked for roadworthiness and mandatory licencing for ALL users, including solely man powered bicycles. The latter are especially a pest on footpaths, shared pathways and public roads.

It will be interesting to see how severe the charges are for this person. Surely a manslaughter charge should be at the top of the list. That person rode the bike knowing it was illegal and he should suffer the most severe consequences. Judges seem not to consider the devastation on the family members left behind when this kind of deliberate act is perpetrated.

What a young bloody idiot he is to modify the bike with an electric motor! You would think that at 24yo he would have a bit of sense. Hopefully he gets the book thrown at him for his stupidity. :poop:

The bike rider is just a plain "Dead Shit".

He knew he was doing the wrong thing, now he faces the consequences for his ratbagery.

He just thinks that he's above the law.

I hope that his devastation he has caused just plays on his mind.

Are you telling us that the 24 year old bike rider DELIBERATELY struck the old fella? The bike rider also suffered serious injuries.

How do you know this? The incident took place at 6.40pm last Monday and the sun would have set over an hour beforehand. Did the incident occur in a dimly lit place? Was the 68 year old wearing dark clothing and thereby making himself unsighted? Was he walking on the road? You don't know and I don't know from the scant details provided. Manslaughter? Give me a break!

Police allege the bicycle was fitted with an electric motor and may have been able to travel at speeds in excess of 80 kilometres per hour. The speed limit on the majority of the Frankston-Flinders Road is 80kmh or 100kmh.

The bolded is an assumption on the Victorian Police's part. The word MAY says it all.

In other words, you are making assumptions yourself!
