If you’ve watched Crocodile Dundee, then you know Paul Hogan. And if you know who Paul Hogan is, you might remember that time he met the Queen wearing nothing but a cut-off flannel shirt and shorts.
Yes, that iconic attire.
Well, the Aussie actor recently sat down for an interview and revealed what happened that day – and what the Queen said to him when they met.
Paul Hogan sat down with A Current Affair host Tracy Grimshaw to talk about his new book, Australia According to Hoges – which he describes as a ‘love letter to Down Under’.
The 83-year-old Crocodile Dundee star reflected a lot on his personal life, including the controversial moment he met the Queen while wearing very…unorthodox attire.
The beloved star also shared how the Queen apologised to him for turning down his offer for dinner.
Tracy brought up the photo of Paul meeting the Queen after his performance at the Royal Charity Concert at the Sydney Opera House in 1980.
‘I love that shot. I got a lot of flack over that but the Queen didn’t mind,’ he explained.
Paul was wearing a cut-off flannel shirt, stubby shorts, and footy socks when he met the late Queen.
He previously stated that despite everyone’s shock, the Queen herself wasn’t bothered by his outfit choice.
During another interview back in 2020, Paul explained that the garb was his ‘summer working uniform’.
‘The stubbies and the torn-off shirt were the standard builders' (and) labourers' uniform back in the 70s,’ he joked.
Paul told Tracy that the Queen had ‘apologised’ to him when they met after she ‘won’ a prize to eat dinner with him at his house.
He said: ‘The show we did at the Opera House to entertain her, part of the thing I did was to pretend to draw the lucky seat prize.’
The comedian added that when he ‘drew’ lucky winners – of course, it was of the Queen and Prince Philip – he told them that the prize was dinner at his place. He even told the royals how to get there, and which bus to take. We wish we could’ve been there to witness that in person!
‘It was all funny,’ he joked.
‘But when I met her, she then leaned over and said, “I'm sorry dear, I don't think we'll be able to make dinner”, which is great, she's got a sense of humour,’ Paul added.
Aside from meeting the Queen, the movie star also described his chronic health battle. He revealed that he’d lost a lot of weight and is now ‘held together with string’.
He shared: ‘I had a problem on the aorta and the kidney and the treatment fixed it but it shrunk me,’ referring to the loss of his body fat and how his muscles ‘shrank’.
Paul claimed that he was ‘fit’ until he was 79, but when he turned 80 his health started to rapidly decline.
‘I'd still take out most 40-year-olds then I turned 80 and there's a saying that turning 80 is not for sissies because things start to fall apart but, no, I can't complain.’
Well, that was certainly an interesting story, wouldn’t you agree? What did you think about it? Let us know in the comments!
