Passenger uncovers hidden risque meaning of 'pineapples' on cruise ships

The pineapple has long been associated with friendliness and hospitality; chances are, you may have even seen pineapples (or pineapple decor) frequently positioned in hotel and restaurant entry areas to greet visitors.

On the other hand, if you were to turn that pineapple upside down, you might find that it tells a very different story. And by very, we mean a VERY different story…

On a ship, as well as occasionally on land, a 'pineapple' refers to an unspoken code for switching partners or 'swinging'.

If you see a pineapple displayed on a cruise ship door, it indicates that the passengers are eager to mingle with other couples for some 'adult fun'.

While aboard a cruise, Dominique, a foreign travel content creator, became aware of this when she noticed several rooms that had what appeared to be a pineapple sticker or magnet attached to their doors.

'When you're on your first cruise, and you see that everyone has these cute pineapples on their door,' Dominique said in her TikTok video, and then she laughed: 'I wonder what's the occasion?'

Millions of people have already watched her video on the platform, with many pointing out the fruit's hilarious implications. However, not everyone was aware of it.

'Oh my god, I could have had an awkward moment,' one user admitted in the comments section. Another said: 'Becoming an adult is a curse. I don't want to know what that means…'

Many were also surprised that most people didn't know what it meant, with one person saying, 'It's 2022, and people still don't know that an upside pineapple represents swingers?'

If you now think that wearing pineapple-themed clothes and accessories was embarrassing, just imagine what this woman felt when earlier this year, she learned the surprising implications of the pineapple tattoo she had always thought was innocent.

Queensland local Brittany Lewin was left humiliated when the 'upside down' pineapple tattoo she had turned out to be a coded signal used by swingers to find one another.

You read it here, folks! If you're going on a cruise trip anytime soon, you might want to leave your pineapple-themed stuff at home, or else people might think it's a 'signal' for something else...

Haha. Very funny, apparently wearing a "black " ring is a sign too.

Back in the war years, apparently, a packet of OMO washing powder left on the front step meant. "On My Own".

Who comes up with all this s hit. Crikey now even a pineapple is associated with something some people would not like. Lots of people go on cruise ships in the hopes of finding love, you can thank the love boat for that.

Well, at least you didn't label it "X-Rated"; I'll be happy with that small mercy.
Now, calling it 'R'-rated? Might be appropriate in this instance, signifying "Rough End Of..."?
