Passenger accuses airport of ripping him off for paying $35 for a serving of “panini” — “How the hell are airport restaurants calling it a panini?”

We've all been there – we're in a hurry and we need to buy something quick so we end up paying way more than we would if we had the time to shop around.

But one man's story of being charged $35 for a panini and hot chips at an airport has shocked the internet.

Taking his frustration on Reddit, the passenger posted a photo of the meal along with the caption: "How the hell are airport restaurants calling it a panini, charging $US25 bucks ($35) and then giving you this?"

The meal itself doesn't sound that bad – a panini is just a toasted sandwich, after all. But when you factor in that the man says he paid extra for the sandwich and hot chips, it starts to sound like a rip-off.

Reddit users quickly reacted to the post, with many saying that they feel sorry for the frustrated passenger.

One person wrote: "Once you cross the airport property line, you have entered a lawless land with no checks and balances."

"Airports look at regular prices and times it by two when making their menus," another added.

A third chimed in: "They've got you trapped there waiting for a flight, what are you going to do? Walk back through check-in? They've got captive customers and extremely limited competition, they can get away with overcharging."

Aside from the discussion on airport food prices, the post also sparked a debate about the classic Italian sandwich...

The original panini is a sandwich made with Italian bread. They are sometimes served warm after grilling or toasting.

However, in many English-speaking countries, the term 'panini' is used to refer to a toasted sandwich made from any type of bread.

One person argued: "To me the difference between a panini and a sandwich is the press/grill. Also different bread. This to me is a sandwich."

"It's not even grilled, they didn't even bother toasting it," another pointed out.

Others, on the other hand, said that the passenger got what he ordered,

One comment read: "Panini is Italian for sandwich, that's a sandwich."

"Panini is literally just the Italian word for sandwich," another added.

How about you? Do you think the passenger got ripped off for paying $35 for a serving of panini and hot chips? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Airports SUX. They charge a fortune for parking, a fortune in rent for shop space. Why? Every one who flys is/was rich. They have a licence to print money at the expense of the public and are not held accountable for anything including noise and pollution

make some good old fashioned Cheese and vegemite sandwiches and take them with you . .You will pay through he nose for a coffee, but you will at least have something worthy to eat . . ;-)
