Parma, Parmi, or Parmy? Victorians divided over spelling of classic pub meal

Chicken parmigiana is a classic chicken dish that is loved by pretty much every Aussie, with thousands being served every single day at bistros and pubs across the country.

The classic Australian take on the parmigiana is made from baked and breaded chicken breast fillet, topped with generous layers of cheese and tomato sauce, and is usually served with chips and salad. Yum!

And over time, a variety of nicknames have been developed for the dish, with some Aussies saying they can even differ depending on whether the chips are served underneath or on the side of the chicken.

But there has never been a general consensus about the classic meal’s true nickname.

That’s probably why an innocent street sign in Melbourne sparked a debate among Victorians.

In a bid to encourage people to go back to their local pubs, Bundaberg Rum has put up a street sign, saying: “Don’t forget the parmies”, along with a photo of the classic dish on the side.

But what caught people’s attention wasn’t the tagline but the spelling.

In a post shared on Reddit, many Victorians pointed out that the correct shortcut for chicken parmigiana is “parma”, not “parmi” or “parmy”, even implying that the ad wasn’t written by a local.

Several users agreed and said that they “cringed” when they saw the post. One user even wrote: “TEAR DOWN THIS ADVERT”.

The debate for the classic chicken meal’s “correct” shorthand term has been hotly contested for a long time.

In fact, in 2018, even Premier Dan Andrews had to intervene and conduct a Facebook poll so that people could finally decide for themselves.

The poll ran on the premier’s Facebook page for 24 hours, with over 32,700 respondents voting for their chosen nickname.

In the end, the term “parma” won in a passionate landslide victory over “parmi” and “parmy”.

Personally I don't care how you spell it. I just love them. But this appears to be a state problem. Bundaberg Rum being a Queensland brew probably spelt parmies like Queenslanders do. It certainly doesn't seem like a problem to me. Guess I'm used to seeing parmies on most Queensland pub menus.

Yes, this is absolutely a State defined argument! Lived in Victoria until i was 59, where it is a Parma. Been in NSW for the last three years where it is called a Parmi. Drives me nuts, oh, and they were better in Victoria too! ( Just my opinion ).

That's what happens to you when you're in extended isolation in Victoria. You make something big out of nothing! 🤣

Parmigiana is a traditional dish made with veal, not chicken. Pubs adopted the chicken filets because of cheapness and ease of getting the cooking right, most had no idea how to cook veal properly.;)

It’s parma for me. However, the pedant in me says that if you would spell it parmy, then using parmies as the plural form is correct. 🤣
