Pancake mix recalled from stores amid allergen concerns
- Replies 2
Even though we as shoppers are careful and diligent when it comes to reviewing the ingredients at the grocery store, it can be frustrating to know that more and more food items these days include allergens that are not listed on the label.
Whatever happened to quality control?
As we reported recently, a popular Christmas pudding had to be recalled because of an undeclared allergy in the list of ingredients.
Apparently, another set of products are being recalled right now for the same reason!
The Protein Bread Company (or PBCo for short) has announced the urgent recall of their Protein Pancake Mix (300g), Protein Muffin Mix (340g), and Vegan Egg Replacer (180g).
According to Food Standards Australia, these items can induce an allergic reaction in some customers due to an undeclared allergen, soy, in the ingredients.
The products were sold online and in independent stores in New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia.
The best-before dates on the recalled goods are as follows:
Unlike nut, egg, or milk allergies, soy allergies are less common and most frequently affect young children. And luckily, they outgrow it most of the time.
Most people who are allergic to soy have rather minor symptoms, although everyone's reactions are different. Even though they are uncommon, severe and possibly fatal reactions can occur.
If you or anyone you know suffers from a soy allergy, it is important that you always have access to an epinephrine injector. Epinephrine is the first-line treatment for anaphylaxis.
Read more about anaphylaxis and how to use an adrenaline autoinjector (EpiPen) in one of our previous articles here.
Stay safe always, everyone!
