In the dead of night, while most of the Kingsgrove community lay in slumber, a shadowy figure crept along the quiet streets of this typically peaceful Sydney suburb.
Armed with nothing more than a stanley knife, this individual embarked on a destructive spree that would leave residents reeling and the local police force on high alert.
As the sun rose, the extent of the vandalism became clear: 100 cars had been targeted, with 200 tyres slashed, resulting in an estimated $40,000 worth of damage.
This 'putrid act', as one victim described it, has not only caused financial strain but also a sense of violation and disbelief among the locals.
Frank Brady, a resident of Kingsgrove, woke to find his vehicle among the dozens affected on his street.
'Pretty disgusting and putrid act by whoever did it in the community,' Brady said.
Paul Tan, another victim, expressed his bewilderment at the nature of the crime.
'It just feels so silly, he just got the tyres...he didn't smash the windows or anything,' Tan said, struggling to comprehend the motive behind such a targeted yet seemingly random act of vandalism.
The financial repercussions are significant. With the cost of tyre replacement hovering around $200 each, the residents are now faced with a hefty collective bill.
CCTV footage captured the hooded figure in the act, methodically moving from car to car, slashing tyres with chilling efficiency between 2:30 and 6:00 am.
The footage showed the slasher targeting vehicles on five different streets, leaving behind a trail of deflated rubber and deflated spirits.
The New South Wales Police are actively investigating the incident, calling for anyone with dashcam vision in Caroline, Mashman, Northcott, and Vivienne Streets, or any other information, to come forward.
The hooded tyre tyrant remains at large.
In a similar story, residents of one community criticised a speed detection vehicle for damaging the grass verge.
There have also been multiple instances where mobile speed cameras have been accused of being placed in ‘sneaky’ locations. You can learn more about the story here.
