Outrageous cost leaves women shocked at bakery: 'I've been robbed!'

It's a challenging feat to control expenses and make ends meet these days. Prices of necessities such as food, clothing, transportation, and basic utilities have been soaring whilst wages and Centrelink payments struggle to keep up with the rising cost of living.

Just take the case of this woman who was left speechless after paying a whopping $25 for a simple baked good.

Sydney local Hannah Bowman revealed that she was left ‘fuming’ after paying the hefty price of a smoked salmon bagel, a price she’s since labelled as ‘absolutely criminal’.

Taking to social media to recall the details of the incident, the podcast producer said she didn’t think she’d be paying $25 for a single bagel.

‘Guys, I’ve been the victim of a heinous crime,’ she said in her TikTok video.

‘I just went for a little walk to buy coffee, and I walked past a little bakery, and I saw this bagel, and I thought, “I’m going to buy my lunch now”,’ she continued before adding that she thought the baked good looked delicious.

She even said she was excited to try the bagel because she’s never tried the café before.

Although, she didn’t name the venue.

‘Tell me why when I went to tap, they said, “That’ll be $25, please.” For one smoked salmon bagel. Is this a mistake? Can that be real?’ She exclaimed.

She ended the video by stating that she ‘felt sick’ at the high price tag.

When asked why she didn't walk away after hearing the price, she said, ‘Honestly I think I was in shock and didn’t realise what had happened until I walked out’.

The clip quickly captured the attention of many shocked social media users.

‘I know inflation is real, but that’s a bit too much! But it does look good, and it does look a decent size. Hopefully, it tastes as good as $25,’ one commented.

Hannah replied that she thought the food was tasty but was ‘still shocked’ at the price.

‘You better make that last lunch, dinner, and breakfast tomorrow,’ another wrote.

Someone else added that the price increases are ‘getting ridiculous’, while another claimed that the café ‘robbed’ Hannah.

‘I usually just pay and run but no way would I pay that,’ they added.

‘For $25 you could have bought everything and made 6, that’s ridiculous.’

Others shared similar experiences.

‘A café wanted to charge me $12.50 for a cheese croissant last week…like a reheated toasted one, not a fancy one,’ someone revealed.

A second added: ‘That happened to me with a salad recently and I panicked and said, no, no sorry, and ran away.’

‘Wow. A café once tried to charge me $2.50 extra to put butter on a toasted bagel and I thought that was bad!’ A third commented.

One more responded: ‘That happened to me for a toastie plus small coffee, $21…How? When? Why?’

This isn’t the first time someone has taken an issue with the rising costs of everyday food items.

A local pub-goer was outraged after being charged $14 for a ‘tiny’ bowl of hot chips and sauce. The frustrated customer took to social media to share his experience and posted an image of the ‘pathetic meal’ he received.

‘Ordered one for the table to share. Did not expect such a small portion. Should have just ordered another beer,’ they claimed. You can read more about this story here.

Given the financial difficulties, it comes as no surprise that many are changing their habits and cutting back on some recreational activities to save more. Instead, many are opting to stay home as a practical way to make their budget stretch for longer.

According to an analysis by the comparison website Finder, a lot of people are even cutting back on simple pleasures like takeaway dinners. One-third of those surveyed are also limiting the gifts they buy, while 15 per cent of those surveyed said they’ve had to, unfortunately, cut back on visits to the doctor or dentist. More details about Finder’s reports can be read here.

Others said they’ve had to cut back on grocery staples aside from takeaways and recreational activities. In a post that went viral on the social media forum Reddit, one person asked what people had stopped buying due to the cost-of-living crisis. Some said they cut back on cereal, others are now refraining from buying certain fruit or vegetables. While many are skipping out on meat. You can find more details about this story here.

It sounds like those businesses don't want repeat customers.

I would hand it all back and say no thanks, I feel some of these coffee shops pick a number out of the air and see if we would be willing to pay it. There has to be a limit to these greedy coffee shop owners if we all refused to buy and said, "No thanks I will go elsewhere'' they would soon get the message. We are being taken advantage of left right and center with these absorbent prices.

It doesn't surprise me REF: Late at night, Perth airport an hour and a half to a connecting flight home.

I feel Hungry so I go up to the international lounge for something hot and was charged $45.00 for a meat pie. I was a good tasting meat pie, but $45.00?

they used to be 11c 13c with sauce.

Times are changing.

I purchased three packets of Smoked Salmon from Aldi around xmas time for $19.99 500 grams. There were about 12 slices in each packet. I frozen each slice using baking paper to separate. It worked out at $1.70 a slice. Woolworths sells 300 grams Ocean Blue Smoked Salmon $14.80. That's probably about $2.50 per slice. The $25 sounds very high but surely this woman wasn't expecting to pay $3.00 or even $5.00. She should have been expecting to pay around $20 at least. I bet they put about 4 slices at least on it. That's about $8.00 right there. I wonder whether salad as well. I wonder what the salad was.

I still have the frozen smoked salmon portions in the freezer, ready to use when I want and until I run out. I can have on toast, with scrambled eggs, Smoked Salmon Fettuccine. I can have when I want it. Well, at least until it runs out and I can afford more when on Special Buys again.

It's so long ago that I bought a meal out or takeaway that I know I'd have a heart attack when they tell me the price. I don't understand people being unable to be out for 3, 4 or even 5 hours without needing nourishment in some form. ;)
I don't, even at home. One meal a day, even when I'm out. Always been like this.
