Outrage ensues after shoppers discover the truth behind this Kmart worker's quirky act

At the Seniors Discount Club, we always enjoy sharing heartwarming stories that bring joy to people's faces. Unfortunately, we have a tale today that took an unexpected turn, leaving shoppers and social media users feeling disappointed and somewhat outraged.

You might have seen a video making its rounds a few weeks ago. It featured Liam Gildea, a Kmart employee, who decided to add a unique twist to his end-of-shift store announcement.

With a charming British accent and the enchanting melody of Vivaldi's classical piece 'Spring', Liam injected a delightful and light-hearted touch into the typically mundane store-closing message.

This video quickly gained traction, amassing nearly 11 million views and leaving viewers in stitches as they marvelled at the creativity of this young Australian musician. You can read more about it here.

However, not everyone appreciated the humour in this situation—especially the higher-ups at Kmart.

After the incident, Gildea received feedback that he had violated Kmart's policies and procedures. Later, he informed his followers that he had made the decision to resign from his position at Kmart due to the incident. Source: Liam Gildea/Tiktok

According to Liam, he had always taken a more creative approach to his store announcements during his tenure at Kmart. 'I've always done those announcements a little bit off script,' he shared.

'There's a little thing written down for employees to just read off of, and I just wanted to have a little bit of fun, change things up a little bit.'

From tweaking the words of the scripted announcement to composing a rap at Christmas time, Liam always found ways to make his job more enjoyable. But it seems his latest creative expression didn't sit too well with the management team at Kmart.

Liam revealed that he was reprimanded for his actions, which Kmart deemed a breach of the store's Standard Operating Procedures and social media policy. He was later told not to make store announcements anymore and to limit his replies to comments on the video.

Disappointed by the company's response, Liam eventually decided to resign from his position.

This unexpected turn of events has left internet users and Kmart shoppers voicing their dismay at how the situation was handled. Many have left comments on the video, even tagging Kmart Australia's social media account, expressing bafflement at their actions.

As one commenter pointed out: 'How can you fire someone for improving customer relations and making it fun for customers?'

Others chimed in, remarking that this was a missed opportunity for Kmart to embrace a new kind of positive marketing and boost its brand.

'Your content boosted the (Kmart) brand, and now they've just damaged it themselves,' one person wrote.

Companies don't like change unless it's them doing the changes.

I think this young man took great initiatives to try and make closing fun .

But I also understand how kmart didn't want videos or announcements changed without their permission. This young man was good but maybe others posting or taking the initiative may not be good and may actually offend
Leading to complaints

They do have rules for a reason

To Kmart crusty old stiff shirted poor excuse for execs get a life all you do is sit in a officer critising those who do a great job. Remember without the customers and nice Store staff you office people wouldn’t have a job. Bring back the likes of liam

I haven’t seen or heard the original incident but from reading a bit about it in previous SDC posts it seems like this young man did not abuse the company in any way, did not use foul language etc so “what’s the problem, KMart?” He seems to have brightened the day for some.

Get a grip Kmart! There is enough lack of smiles out here!

I'm an artist and years ago did a series of quite large works on paper of iconic condiment brands - Clive of India curry powder, a jar of spanish olives, and the well known jar of Vegemite. My agent approached the head offices of each of these brands to see if they were interested in purchasing them for display in their corporate spaces. One of these was Kraft. Next thing we know, we received a very ugly letter from Kraft's lawyers threatening to sue us if we tried to sell the picture of the jar of vegemite - citing breach of copyright! Our own lawyer told us to do nothing. Big American 'ambulance chasers' apparently threaten to do this all the time. How Andy Warhol got away with his paintings of Campbell soup tins I'll never know!

Your right cathrine simply wonderful customer service brightens up a atmosphere how can that be protocol it may probably made shoppers happy and who in hell was the clown that compained about the Kmart employee they encourage staff to be cheerful approachable and give the customer a good experience so A staff member does and it’s breach of protocol I know the employee said I left Kmart rubbish the person was pushed out for being nice oh. Yes. sacked same thing

The executives at Kmart need to get a grip, bloody boring office huggers that have no idea what it is like to work on the floor. Very similar to hospitals actually. I feel for Liam who was just trying to brighten up everyones day. As usual boring people wreck it for the 98% of us who enjoy life.

Well all as I can say is: your loss Kmart!! If you used your brains, you could have used Liam to your advantage, Liam is better off somewhere else!!
I am sure the majority of customers would have enjoyed his little banter, I know I certainly would have!

I thought it was lovely and I would enjoy his announcements. Kmart disgusts me to the point of going elsewhere to shop. He wasn't harming any one . I will be sending them an email.
