Millions of Australians are about to say goodbye to one familiar app as another steps in to take its place.
A government shake-up means a simpler way to manage health services online is on the horizon.
But with change often comes questions about security and ease of use.
After an audit revealed Australians were juggling multiple apps to access government services, myGov underwent major upgrades.
The improvements meant people could now use the myGov app to access Medicare’s digital services—eliminating the need for the Express Plus Medicare app.
Services Australia general manager Hank Jongen said the changes made it simpler and safer to manage government services online.
‘If you need to make or track a Medicare claim, check your immunisation history, request a Medicare card or update your organ and tissue donation preferences, the myGov app is the only app you need,’ he said.
He explained that Medicare services in the myGov app had a familiar look and feel, and that users could add their digital Medicare and organ donor cards to the myGov app wallet.
Mr Jongen also highlighted security features such as passkeys, digital ID, and a security review tool to help keep personal information safe from scammers.
The Express Plus Medicare app would no longer be available in app stores from Friday, ahead of its full retirement on 1 November.
People who already had the app could continue to use it until that date.
Here’s a quick explainer on how the myGov app works and what you can do with it.

While combining multiple services into one app can make life easier, it doesn’t always guarantee that the experience will be smooth for everyone.
Sometimes, the design of a product or service can unintentionally create new barriers—especially when it isn’t built with all users in mind.
One recent story explores how certain everyday tools and systems are falling short, and what’s being done to improve them.
