Old oil heaters

Remember sitting in front of the oil heater on a chilly day? These heaters were once a common sight in Aussie homes during the ‘70s. But when oil prices skyrocketed, many switched to more affordable options like gas heaters. Do you have fond memories of huddling by an oil heater? Share them in the comments below.

Yes I do. Dad would sometimes fall asleep in front of it on the lounge. Us kids would put the old bobby pins in his hair to curl it. He did not have a lot of hair but when he would wake up he would be mad crazy at us that we curled his few locks. We would all run for cover.

Yes, my parents got rid of the old wood fire when I was about 10 yrs old living in the bush in NSW. They also had one installed when they had a new home built when I was 14 yrs old. They were great, but oil did smell a bit, so had to leave door open to get rid of smell! Heated up room ok if closed doors up. I do like the old wood fires, so romantic and cosy!

In 1963 my father bought his house and it had a crappy gas heater about 1/4 of the size of the oil heater shown in the lounge room. He also had a Kero heater in the kitchen A few years later he actually bought same heater as in photo. Then when oil prices went up and gas was much cheaper he installed a new gas heater similar size to the oil one. Both heaters were great. Cost of running makes you change!! Nowadays in my home I have Gas Ducted Heating which gets minimal use because of cost to run and a large wood heater which I use all the time. Love a wood fire!!

That pic is NOT AN OIL HEATER. It is ,in fact a VULCAN GAS HEATER I USED TO HAVE ONE OF THESE. Now use a reverse cycle air con.

I think you are right but they are similar. We had the Vulcan Oil Heater and it was so good when it was below zero outside. You can't beat reverse cycle air cons though, so easy.
