If you heat a container of water at the top of Mount Everest, what happens to the boiling point?

A. Nothing. It stays at 100 deg C
B. It increases to 108.3 degrees C
C. Water doesn't boil at the top of Mount Everest
D. It decreases to 68 deg C

D is the correct answer.

Background: There is a phenomenon in physics called vapour pressure. It is where the particles in the liquid form and those in the vapour form are in equilibrium. As atmospheric pressure decreases with increasing altitude, the ability of a substance to go from liquid to gas becomes easier, hence the drop in the boiling point. The simplest way to determine the boiling point of water at a given altitude is to use the August or Antione equation (providing you know the vapour pressure of water at any given altitude).

Are you all confused?

It’s because you and everything else – including Earth’s oceans and atmosphere – are spinning along with the Earth at the same constant speed.
