A giant of entertainment, comedy, and acting, Barry Humphries has touched people’s hearts, minds, and funny bones.
That’s why his passing early this year came as a heartbreaking shock to the entire nation.
Humphries underwent hip replacement surgery in March after suffering from a fall. However, after a month, he was forced to return to the hospital due to complications following the surgery.
He died on 22 April this year, aged 89.
Perhaps as a testament to his enduring legacy as a cultural icon, the NSW government announced that they would be hosting a state memorial for the man who brought decades of entertainment to Aussies.
His state memorial will take place at the Sydney Opera House on Friday, 15 December, at 11 am. It is expected to last between an hour and a half to two hours.
‘The State Memorial will bring together dignitaries, family, friends, and fans of Mr Humphries from across Australia and around the world to celebrate his extraordinary career and achievements,’ the NSW government announced.
Limited free tickets will be released through the Sydney Opera House website on Friday, November 17, at 2 pm AEDT.
The website will have an online queuing system. People should only queue using one browser, meaning one cannot open multiple tabs or windows in the hopes of getting higher chances to score tickets.
Only two tickets per person are allowed.
Those who get tickets quickly must arrive early, as doors for the memorial will open at 10:15 am, and you'll need to be seated by 10:45 am. Latecomers won't be allowed in, according to reports.
The Sydney Opera House also issued a warning to prospective ticket holders: ‘The authorised agency for this event is the Sydney Opera House.’
‘If you purchase tickets from a non-authorised agency such as Ticketmaster Resale, Viagogo, Ticketbis, eBay, Gumtree, Tickets Australia or any other unauthorised seller, you risk that these tickets are fake, void or have previously been cancelled.’
For those who won’t be able to secure tickets, there is still good news: the state memorial will be streamed online for those who couldn’t secure tickets.
Humphries was best known for his character Dame Edna Everage, an acerbic wit with purple hair, rhinestone glasses, and colourful dresses.
As Edna rose to fame, Humphries also made other characters, such as Sandy Stone–the world’s most boring man—and Sir Les Patterson, the boozy, uncouth, ‘cultural attache’ who always had a drink in his hand. Humphries is survived by his wife, Lizzie Spender; their four children, Tessa, Emily, Oscar and Rupert; and ten grandchildren.
