No more dim sims? Flooding devastates crops and leaves thousands without their favourite snack

As we edge closer to Christmas, supermarkets are still experiencing shortages and supply chain disruptions from the wet weather and flooding that devastated most of Australia.
And now, this supply chain crunch has impacted a party food staple – dim sims.
The recent Victorian floods were more destructive than many of us could have imagined. Homes, businesses and entire towns are still working to repair the damage. Not only that, but Victorian farmers are continuing to feel the impacts long after the water dried up.
Stores and wholesale food retailers have struggled to meet the demand for dim sims due to a shortage of cabbages caused by the floods. That’s certainly not something we had on our 2022 bingo card.
Farmers previously warned that a potato shortage was to be expected this month. Now it seems that cabbage crops, which are a vital ingredient in dumplings, dim sims and wontons, will see supply disruptions as well.
Marathon Foods – the major supplier of dim sims to Coles and Woolworths – was forced to close its production facility in Melbourne due to extensive water damage.
A spokesperson for Marathon Foods told reporters that their Melbourne facility ‘lost all inventory on site’ after the flooding in October.
‘As we are the largest producer of dim sims in Australia, this caused a huge hole in the supply of these products Australia-wide,’ they said.
The spokesperson also added that it has been a ‘tough period’ for the company. We hope they can get back on their feet soon.
Fans of the frozen Chinese food were quick to share their disappointment after struggling to find any on the shelves at their local stores.
‘I wondered why I couldn’t find them anywhere,’ one customer wrote on the company’s Facebook page.
Another shared that when they went to pick up a packet of dim sims from Coles, they found the frozen food section ‘completely empty’.
Marathon Foods assured everyone that their maintenance, quality assurance, and production teams have been working ‘around the clock’ to get everything up and running again.
The company also started supplying food service and retail trading partners again. They said to expect their products back on shelves ‘shortly’.
‘Over the coming weeks, you’ll be able to find our great-tasting Classic Dim Sims and Spring Rolls in your local food and retail outlets,’ said the spokesperson.
Marathon Foods, however, did not specify whether their dim sims will be available in time for Christmas. At this stage, it seems unlikely.
Do you like dim sims? What are your thoughts on this development? It’s devastating to hear that the floods are still impacting so many Australian communities. Our thoughts are with them as they recover.
