No knock, no parcel: Aussie’s note to postie strikes a nerve

If you’ve ever waited all day for a parcel, only to find a dreaded 'Sorry we missed you' card in your letterbox—even though you were home the whole time—then you’re not alone.

In fact, one Aussie’s recent experience with Australia Post has struck such a chord that it’s gone popular, sparking a flood of delivery horror stories from frustrated customers across the country.

Let’s set the scene: a resident from Hermit Park in Townsville, desperate to finally receive a long-awaited pair of headphones, decided to take matters into their own hands.

Knowing they’d be upstairs studying and, crucially, deaf in one ear, they left a polite, handwritten note for their postie. The message, stuck to the outside wall of their door, read:

'Good morning Au Post! Please knock as I’m studying upstairs and am deaf in one ear. Thank you so much! :)'

Not only that, but the resident made sure the front door and windows were open, stayed home all day, didn’t wear headphones, and kept a close eye on the Australia Post app. You’d think that would be enough, right?

Wrong. Despite all these efforts, the parcel was not delivered.

Instead, the familiar notification popped up: 'We couldn’t deliver your parcel, so we’ve taken it to HERMIT PARK LPO for collection.'

The tracking confirmed the item was now waiting at the local post office—leaving the resident, in their own words, 'fuming' because they couldn’t pick it up until Thursday.

‘Proof that sometimes they’re too lazy to knock or even try to contact you. Fuming as I can’t pick it up till Thursday,’ the user wrote.

An Australia Post spokesperson responded to the situation, telling news.com.au: ‘We are keen to look into this matter further and encourage the customer to get in touch with us directly via our website or by calling.’

According to Australia Post, their drivers—often contractors—are instructed to knock three times, wait 30 seconds, and take a photo of the front door or intercom if they’re unable to complete a delivery. These images are made available to customers through the Australia Post app or customer support.

The original post sparked a flood of similar complaints from other users.

One person wrote: ‘I got the “Sorry your parcel could not be delivered due to not being able to get past stuff in the driveway” … But they walked past everything to put the parcel slip with a note on it exactly where the parcels get put.’

Another added: ‘I get the excuse “no safe location” when the safe location is my front door which is completely obscured from the street, and can’t see anything there – where they left the card.’

A third commented: ‘Every single time I order a parcel I stand on the balcony of my third-story flat and watch the Aus Post van pull into the driveway, put a notice in my mailbox and immediately drive off – drives me crazy!’

Another claimed: ‘They deliberately avoid delivery because it is quicker to just dump every delivery and the local post office.’

However, not everyone had complaints.

‘I had a postie once who would bang on the door and scream at the top of his lungs, “AUSTRALIA POST” even if I’m looking directly at him through the window near the door. God I miss that man,’ one person shared.

Another joked: ‘My postie knocks on my door like he has a warrant, I start hiding stuff around the house (that’s not even illegal) then I realise it’s just Australia Post.’

The renewed criticism comes after a separate incident last week, where an Australia Post driver was fired after being caught on CCTV pretending to deliver a parcel.

Video footage shared on Reddit captured the driver pulling up outside a home’s front gate and sitting in the vehicle for several minutes. The driver then exited the van — without the parcel — walked through the gate, took a photo, and left.

Australia Post later confirmed the driver had been terminated.

‘Australia Post has strict protocols for parcel delivery,’ a spokesperson said.

‘These actions clearly do not align with the standards we expect, and this driver is no longer delivering for Australia Post.’

I had that problem, we had a new parcel delivery guy who constantly put notices in the mailbox, despite leaving a note, saying I am home please leave package and knock.
So the next time I was expecting a package, I left a note
“ hello Aus post I hope you are having a great day, please leave package at door I am home. I also left a small snickers bar, I appreciate your work effort please take this small treat.
He did and I have not had any problems since.

😳wtf! You had to bribe the guy 🤣🤣🤣

I had a box of printer ink cartridges delivered by a young lady in her own car who I assume was an AusPost courier.

There was nothing written on it to indicate what it was. She never rung the bell, but just stood on my drive about 3 metres from my front door and threw it towards the door, then took a photo to prove it was delivered!!🙄
Lucky it wasn't anything valuable.
It was all caught on security camera (about 30 seconds) so sent it to AusPost to look into.

Dear member Freedy50 thankyou for your post. Is it possible that the box of printer ink cartridges were delivered by a staff member from the store from where you ordered the printing ink. Just a thought. Wishing you an enjoyable and pleasant week. 🙏🦋

I have found that the Australia Post deliveries have been very reliable and friendly, but the couriers, not so much. Only last week I had a small digital TV box delivered, not big or heavy at all. I live in a conventional block of units with 2 floors of flats and garages underneath. Even though I live on the lower floor, the courier didn't feel like coming up the stairs and just put the parcel on the ground in front of my garage door, in the rain! It was the first time I have ever felt the need to lodge a formal complaint with the courier company, PF Logistics.

Dear member Bearavn, thankyou for your post. If your small digital TV box was damaged by the rain, you should be compensated with the amount that you paid for your product. If you do not get compensated, call or email the Head department of Australia's Post, and explain where your parcel was left and that you want to be compensated for the damage to your product. If you still don't get a response, then contact the Minister who is in charge of Australia's Post. Perhaps this postie has a habit of placing parcels in the rain, causing damage to the product that is being delivered. Wishing you an enjoyable and pleasant week. 🙏🦋

I am in Perth and my posties are great. No issues.
I send packaged to Sydney and Brisbane...... what a nightmar. They don't like to deliver to a unit in a retirement village in Qld but also don't bother to leave a note. It sat in the PO for 2 weeks. Thank heavens i was tracking on my app. Express post bag to Sydney..... nearly 4 weeks later delivered. Package from Sydney to Wellington NSW went to NZ then returned back to me in Sydney 5 months later.
Don't bother complaining 😉

The thing that gets me is that some vendors won't send to a PO Box...we do not get mail delivery to us...we are rural.
So I fixed that and got Parcel Collect at the same PO...I read all the problems with mail delivery and lost parcels...PO boxes are far safer I have found

Hi Littleboy8, how are you, I hope you are happy and well. You don't need to take chill pills or wacky tobaccy, to be calm, as you state in your post. Some people were born with a calm demeanor, respect, and enjoy life to the fullest by being happy, polite and content. They are also greatful, for the quality of life they have reached, that was possible with faith in God. Wishing you an enjoyable and pleasant week. 🙏🦋

And a sense of humour 🌞

i once sent a video of my contract parcel delivery driver ....
he stops, pulls out a pre written card.
does not even attempt to pick up my parcel.
goes to the letterbox with the card
then drives away.

it happened so consistently, that i was able to predict it, and film it.
and still they kept there job.

the actual postie did a great job.
the parcel contractor was the problem.

now i live in a town that has no letter boxes at all ...
we have to go to the post office to collect everything.
but the farmers have the delivery service.
still walking a couple of houses away (the distance to the post office), is good for me.
I’m annoyed with the postal service in Melbourne..On one occasion they threw my parcel over the fence and the contents smashed . Another occasion I’m not sure how the stuff was broken ..
Next time I send something breakable I will request for a fragile sticker…

We have a number of parcels delivered each month and both Australia Post and other courier drivers always leave our parcels in a safe place as nominated by us if we are not home and they call out to us every time that we are inside.....can't complain at all about their service and great friendly attitude. Thanks to all of them. 🙂 (y)

Dear member Silla, thankyou for your post. These Posties that throw the parcels, sound a bit like the employed people who handle baggages at the airport. Wishing you an enjoyable and pleasant week. 🙏🦋
