The Central Coast community is celebrating a significant leap forward in healthcare as Gosford Hospital proudly launches its new Cardiac Electrophysiology Service.
This state-of-the-art addition to the hospital's offerings is a game-changer for local patients who previously faced the burden of travelling to Sydney or Newcastle to receive critical cardiac care.
For the first time, Central Coast residents can access advanced diagnostic and therapeutic treatments for heart conditions right in their backyard.
The service is set to benefit hundreds of patients annually, providing much-needed relief from the stress and inconvenience of long-distance travel for health services.
The introduction of therapeutic ablation for patients with right-sided tachyarrhythmias, commonly known as irregular heart rhythms, is a cornerstone of the new service.
Cardiac ablation is a sophisticated procedure that targets and inactivates small areas of heart tissue responsible for the abnormal heartbeat.
By applying heat or intense cold, the procedure aims to restore and maintain a normal heart rhythm, offering patients a new lease on life.
The service is also conducting diagnostic tests for cardiac patients, including electrophysiology studies, which assess the heart's electrical system and detect abnormal heart rhythms.
Minister for Regional Health Ryan Park expressed his satisfaction with the launch, emphasising the importance of local access to such crucial procedures.
‘I am pleased this new service will be able to offer local patients access to these important procedures on the Central Coast, making it much easier for them to access the treatment they need close to home,’ he said.
‘Central Coast Local Health District is already receiving very positive feedback from patients about how much they appreciate having the local service available to them.’
The feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with patients expressing gratitude for the convenience and accessibility of the new service.

Associate Professor Maged William, Head of Cardiology at the Central Coast Local Health District, also shared his enthusiasm for the project.
‘Previously, it was necessary for patients to travel to Sydney or Newcastle to have these procedures. We are anticipating that the service will benefit hundreds of local patients every year,’ he said.
‘Plans are already underway to expand the scope of the service to treat patients with other common cardiac concerns such as atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia.’
