New documentary unveils rare colourised videos of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s intimate moments together
ITV's new documentary titled "Philip: Prince, Husband, Father" has unveiled rare colourised clips of Queen Elizabeth II and her late husband Prince Philip's intimate moments together.

The documentary, which aired on Wednesday, showed the videos of the royal couple's engagement announcement and later their honeymoon in full colour.

One clip shows the then 21-year-old Princess Elizabeth with the 26-year-old Philip standing on a balcony in Buckingham Palace on July 9, 1947, after announcing their engagement.

The Queen was donning a light pink ensemble with her signature pearls, while Philip was wearing a uniform.

On November 24, 1947, the Queen — who was looking effortlessly elegant in a blue dress with a brown blazer — was spotted walking the grounds of Broadlands in Hampshire with Prince Philip — who was equally charming in a grey suit team with a yellow tie — during their honeymoon.

Another colourised video shows the Duke of Edinburgh touring the commonwealth following Her Majesty's succession to the throne.

Prince Philip boarded the Royal Yacht Britannia in 1956, spending several months travelling to Australia, Antarctica, and beyond.

Royal biographer Penny Junor said that the colourised clip of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip is "the most enchanting little bit of film."

'He looks confident, she has been in front of the press all her life, but it's him that seems to be putting her at ease.'

She also commented on the honeymoon footage, saying: 'This is just wonderful, the dark years of the war are behind them and this is the beginning of the era.'

The documentary also revealed that Prince Philip 'secretly' comforted Prince William at Princess Diana's funeral in 1997.

In the clip, the late Duke of Edinburgh was seen touching the then 15-year-old Prince William's back, comforting his grandson 'when he thought the cameras couldn't see them'.

Martin Palmer, who co-founded The Alliance of Religions and Conservation with Prince Philip, said: 'There’s a moment where they go under the Horse Guards Parade Arch where it’s quite clear that Prince Philip - and I asked him about this he said, "Yes, I didn’t think the cameras could see us" - at that point, he turns to William and comforts him.'

'You’ve just got to watch that moment and realise there is a grandfather who is trying to help his young, very vulnerable grandson struggle through this awful awful moment.'

Mr Palmer further commented on the late royal's eagerness to ensure that the young Princes do not grow up in a 'dysfunctional' family.

'He knew what it was like to be a member of a dysfunctional family and he tried his hardest to make sure that did not happen to his grandchildren,' he shared.

It should be noted that Prince Philip, who initially said that the funeral of Princess Diana was about her sons, offered to walk with Prince William and Prince Harry alongside their father, Prince Charles, behind the coffin of the late royal on 6 September 1997.

The late Duke of Edinburgh's biographer, Gyles Brandeth, said that although Prince Philip was not meant to take part in the funeral, he did the deed as an act of grandfatherly kindness.

Royal author Ingrid Seward also revealed that Prince Philip encouraged William, who was initially reluctant to take part in the walk, by telling him that he "will walk if you [William] walk".

'At first William flatly refused [to walk during the funeral]. Charles pleaded with him and said that it would be utterly wrong for him not to accompany them,' she said.

'Prince Philip weighed into the argument and eventually, William agreed to take part - but only on the condition that his grandfather walked beside him.'

'Philip reportedly said: "It’s about the boys. They’ve lost their mother".'

In April, both Prince William and Prince Harry walked behind the coffin of Prince Philip after he passed away.
