New bin charges hit millions of Aussies—Are you one of the struggling ones?

like it’s about to become even harder for a large portion of Australians, as millions are being slapped with huge rubbish bin collection charges.

According to an analysis by the Herald Sun, almost 60 per cent of regional councils across the state of Victoria are increasing their waste charges from July 1st of this year by five per cent, and a quarter of them increased by a whopping 10 per cent.

It’s not just an increase in regular rates either—councils are also raising their waste service levies, which aren’t included in the general rates. These services are capped at 3.5 per cent increases every year.

Council Watch President Kelvin Granger said, ‘Ratepayers are struggling as it is with the cost of living at the moment, and our position is that we want to see these rubbish charges capped.’

‘We want to see the State government step in and do that, like they did for general council rates,’ he added.

With Mornington Peninsula Shire increasing its waste levy by a huge 22.85 per cent in May, this burden may be coming to Australia’s other regions soon.

'Eventually, we think they will. I live in country Victoria, and it hasn't happened here yet, but I don't doubt that it will follow on,' Mr Granger claimed.

Residents in the City of Yarra protested the move, but the increase in rubbish charges still rolled out. It’s estimated they’ll be paying an extra $115 per year.

The Alpine Shire Council also increased their 2023/24 rates by $179.

Councils claimed that the increased charges were ‘difficult but necessary’ and cited that the state government's move to double the state landfill levy in 2020 was the cause.

From $65.90, it was changed to $125.90 per tonne in 2020, and it has increased since then to $129.27.

Additionally, the lack of space and illegal dumping (which costs councils up to $1 million a year) were also mentioned as causes for the rising charges.

Victorian Waste Management Association Chief Executive Peter Anderson said the state is struggling to ‘keep up’ with ‘the waste being produced’.

‘Until we figure out a way to deal with waste more seriously, it’s something we are going to have to continue paying for,’ he stated.

From recollection the contractors for garbage collection in some councils in WA threatened strike action unless their charges were increased. Councils agreed as they didn't want stinky rubbish on the kerbside. Of the ratepayers got slugged but the councillors still kept their "entertainment ".

Council rates one of the biggest thefts in the political field.

Time for ratepayers to stand up to councils they are getting paid the same as politicians, and do very little for the money except putting their hands in ratepayers pockets ,with their thought bubbles with no consideration for us.

Rates have gone up with one of the reasons being that something has to pay for the red lids put on our bins.
You get one dunce who comes up with the idea to remove the dark green lids for red ones, and all councils follow suit to "fall in line with other councils".
The rates then go up to pay for the change over and if the community can handle the rate increase, they will simply keep going on with it the added rates, just like Kennet did with the "Once only $100 per household charge to get the state out of debt". But that was something that just never stopped.

I live in Victoria, our tip fees as skyrocket high. They weigh your vehicle before and after and the cheapest fee is $25 !!!!!!! This is the reason why people dump rubbish where they can.
$140+ for a standard 6x4 trailer load (not allowing for anything higher than the sides of your trailer either)
There is one company in Melbourne that drops off a bag where they say you can fit up to 25 rubbish bins worth in it. They give you the bag, you fill it up with practically anything, and using a crane they will come and pick it up for you. Last checked (and it has been a while) for around the same cost as a trailer load, you can nearly double in the bag what you can in a trailer. Company is BluCroc. Won't hurt to check them out.

They use the illegal dumping as one of the reasons for the rise.
Do they not think that will only increase the problem, as more people will illegally dump. Most people illegally dumping do so because tip fees are so high. Glad I live in the country, our tip is still free.
Ours used to be then Beattie (labor ) Premier decided we would go To amalgamation with ratepayers having no say and charges continue to rise. They will eventually price us out of our homes as Labor believes we have no right to own properties. One of my relations who was elected to state parliament years ago said so in his maiden speech to parliament . I have never forgiven him for that.
