A recent discovery in various ALDI supermarkets’ self-serve cash registers has sparked a heated debate among shoppers after one customer shared an image of a self-serve checkout to a well-known Facebook group.

“Wow, this is the first time I’ve seen this,” the customer captioned their post on the Aldi Fans Australia page.

The alert read “Card payment only”, meaning that those planning to pay for their groceries with cash would have to move to another checkout.

ALDI Australia launched a trial of self-serve checkouts at nine stores across New South Wales starting June 2021, in hopes to offer customers “quick and convenient ways to shop”.

However, not everyone welcomed the idea with open arms. Hundreds of users were vocal about the “card only” option, and it seems as though the feedback to date is very divided.

Several were disappointed to find out that the registers only accept credit cards, as they prefer to pay with cash.

“No cash, no buy - so bye-bye. Cash only here!” exclaimed one user.

“I pay for everything with cash. Cash is king!” another chimed.

“I would prefer cash any day, at least I know where it is.” wrote a third.

“I will never use them.” said one more.

Plenty disagreed with the supermarket’s decision to follow Woolworths and Coles’ steps by providing self-serve checkouts, arguing that it closes doors for someone who needs a job opportunity.

“I’d rather ask assistance from a human being, thanks, and keep someone in a job,” one hissed.

Another said: “I used to get paid to do that job, now they want me to do it for free.”

But others were thrilled to hear about the launch, saying it was a long time coming.

“Finally!” wrote one.

“I never have cash, I have almost forgotten it's a thing, doesn't everyone just use their phone to pay for stuff now?” said another.

“People say workers will lose their jobs, but it’s not true.” argued a third. “They never have a lot of staff on and my ALDI is always empty because the workers don’t have time to stock shelves.”

A fourth added: “This makes me super happy. I love self-serve.”

The ALDI customer who posted the image of the register was also in favour of the supermarket’s decision, saying: “I only had six items and it was so quick,”

The only good thing about using self serve in Aldi is that you can go at your own pace and not the super fast put through of the manned checkouts. I always feel super stupid that I can't keep up with the cashiers in putting the purchases back in my trolly and hold up the line as I pay with a card.

Aldi's manned checkouts are so quick at scanning due to their products containing bar codes on all sides of boxes/products.
No need for searching the one barcode like the other supermarkets.

IGA, Coles , Woolies, Bunnings, KMart have had both for years. Aldi should have both as well.

I can’t remember the last time I used cash. Why do people have to complain about everything all the time. Aldi don’t have a lot of staff like Coles and Woolies so with a self serve checkout they can be restocking shelves.

Don’t use the things, I don’t like them. I would rather they hired more staff to serve their customers.

I don't like them because very time I have tried to use them an error comes up and it takes me longer to get out the shop. If I wanted to learn how to use the check out I would have got a job in the supermarket but I liked my job I did at a hospital but have retired now.

I refuse to use self serv in any store. The prices have a service cost included, so if i use self serv it is only extra profit for the store. I recently had to change chemists because my long term chemist went card only.

And as we have seen numerous times when the power fails, or a system "goes down"we cannot possibly become a Cashless Society with any reliability.

What are they griping about? If you don’t pay with card go to a checkout that takes cash….easy really

I ONLY use cash, it's still legal tender.

Don't use them as I feel that I may be stopping someone from getting a much needed job and anyway I like having a chat with the check out person as they scan my items so for me personally I couldn't care less but for those that prefer self serve fine and oh I rarely shop at Aldi.

I think we have to bite the bullet and accept the fact ,that we are moving to a cashless society. Like many I prefer cash,but it is what it is. Happy Sunday morning
